Alex Cross is a popular character created by James Patterson, and has been portrayed by several actors. Morgan Freeman famously played him in the films Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider, while Tyler Perry starred in the movie Alex Cross. However, many consider Aldis Hodge’s performance in the series Cross to be the most compelling depiction of the forensic psychologist and detective.

The thriller series launched in November 2024 with eight episodes, earning praise for Hodge’s acting and the compelling storyline. Season two arrives on February 11, 2026 – over a year after the first – so it’s a good moment to recap what happened previously.

Alex Hunts a Serial Killer in Cross

The first season of the show immediately dives into political issues when Alex begins investigating the murder of Emir, a Black Lives Matter activist. His bosses, however, are quick to try and close the case, suggesting it was simply a drug overdose.

Alex feels something isn’t right with the case. The autopsy revealed Emir had eaten pork, which goes against his strict Muslim beliefs. Despite being told not to pursue it, Alex trusts his gut and the evidence unexpectedly points to Ed Ramsey, a wealthy and influential man in town.

Ed appears pleasant, but he’s actually a terrifying serial killer. He targets people who look like famous killers he admires, then captures and tortures them. He uses his wealth to hire professionals – plastic surgeons, dentists, and others – to painstakingly transform his victims into exact replicas of his idols. This takes the idea of a makeover to a horrifying and unprecedented level, making him one of the most disturbing characters of recent times.

Alex realizes something when they spot a connection between the recent murders – both in how they’re happening and the appearance of the victims. It reminds them of a detail in a book, revealing the killer has already murdered eleven people and is planning a twelfth to complete a disturbing pattern.

The team fears Shannon is about to become the killer’s next target, and they’re in a race against time to find her. Their suspicions are confirmed when they discover Shannon and the suspect, Emir, both used the same dating app and had a connection on it.

Because of Elle’s work at a charity where she meets many rich people, Alex receives an invitation to Ed’s lavish birthday party. He uses this opportunity to dig deeper into his concerns. The situation becomes more urgent when Alex suspects Shannon isn’t just involved, but might actually be present at the party. He tries to manipulate Ed by turning Ed’s own deceptions against him, but Ed reacts angrily and reveals he knows a surprising amount about Alex, unsettling him.

Alex went to Philadelphia, Ed’s hometown, to prove his suspicions. Talking to Ed’s childhood friends, he discovered a disturbing side to Ed – a deep fascination with murder. It became clear Alex was pursuing the right person. However, bringing down someone so powerful and respected wouldn’t be simple. Alex wasn’t willing to wait for permission from his superiors, who dismissed his ideas, and decided to take matters into his own hands.

I was absolutely shocked when Ed appeared to take his own life right there in his office. But it was all a trick! He somehow woke up in the morgue and then, unbelievably, tried to go after Shannon in the hospital. Thankfully, Alex was there, and it finally ended – he wasn’t going to hurt anyone else.

Ed admits to all the killings, but Alex understands how to manipulate the situation. He acts as if they suspect Ed’s old partner, Bobby Trey, is the one truly in charge. Alex figures Ed will suffer the most if he doesn’t get the fame he craves.

I was absolutely captivated by how everything played out! Bobby took the fall for all the murders, which felt…right. But the way they handled Ed was genius. Declaring him clinically insane and only charging him with Emir’s murder and Shannon’s kidnapping meant a life sentence, but he wouldn’t get any credit for the larger scheme. It was a truly brilliant plan, and it really highlighted Alex Cross’s incredible talent for understanding what makes killers tick.

Cross’s Personal Life Is in Shambles

Alex is still rebuilding his life and raising his two children, with support from his mother, who everyone calls Nana Mama. He’s drawn to Elle, who likes him back, but he’s hesitant to start a relationship, at least at first. Eventually, he changes his mind and gives it a chance.

Everyone around Alex – his friends, family, and colleagues – thinks he should see a therapist to deal with his grief, but he refuses, claiming he’s okay. However, his behavior throughout the season tells a different story. This is evident in his intense focus on the Emir case, his desire for revenge against Ed, and the troubles he’s facing with his family.

Alex’s family is being threatened by someone with a connection to his past, and it seems this person intends to cause them trouble. At the same time, Alex is acting recklessly – he’s manipulating Elle and using her to get what he wants without telling her the truth, and he’s taken his son, Damon, on a risky trip to Philadelphia to reconnect with some of Ed’s old, potentially dangerous friends.

The person pursuing Alex and his family is eventually identified as Peter Lenox. Peter had a difficult childhood, but was helped by a woman named Nancy. She also cared for Deirdre Nolan, who came from a very troubled background – her mother struggled with drug addiction. Peter was prone to darkness, and when suspected of murder, Nancy convinced Deirdre to falsely confess, wrongly believing the legal system would treat her more leniently because she was a white woman with a clean record.

While Deirdre was in jail awaiting her trial, her mental health worsened. Alex was asked to evaluate her, and he believed she lacked remorse for the alleged crime. However, Deirdre was actually pretending to be depressed and hadn’t committed the crime at all.

Alex convinced the judge to keep her imprisoned, arguing she posed a danger to the public. This testimony was a key factor in her receiving a life sentence. Later, as her mental health declined, she died by suicide in prison. Nancy and Peter held Alex responsible for her death.

How Cross Season 1 Ends and What’s Next for Alex

The attack on Regina by Peter at Alex’s house is a frightening surprise, leaving viewers worried she won’t survive. Luckily, she pulls through, and Alex starts investigating Peter’s background. He discovers details about Peter’s upbringing, including a woman known as his “street mom” and the story of Deirdre, information that was previously unknown to him. This investigation finally reveals the truth about what’s happening and who is targeting Alex.

He raced to help, shocked to discover the woman was Miss Nancy—Damon’s new piano teacher. She’d quickly become friendly with Regina, seeming sweet and kind, and had gradually become close to the family, all without anyone realizing there was something wrong.

A huge fight breaks out when Alex attempts to rescue his family from the dangerous woman. Nancy was devastated by Deirdre’s death, and Peter felt responsible, unaware of the actions taken by the woman who had unofficially adopted him. Realizing she was cornered and everything was lost, she set the cabin on fire, killing herself.

Now that the Ramsey situation is resolved and Alex and his family are safe, and with Nancy and Peter out of the picture, he can finally relax. However, Elle is upset to discover the truth about Ed – she’s angry she was kept in the dark and, more importantly, put in danger. She refuses to accept being treated like that.

Their relationship is completely finished. Alex now understands that his unwillingness to step up has created a difficult situation for him. He goes to Maria’s grave and makes the decision to begin therapy and work on healing himself.

Alex will return for Season 2 as a detective and forensic psychologist, continuing to solve challenging cases. The new season of Cross will introduce fresh faces and a new wave of criminals for Alex to investigate and bring to justice.

It’s unclear if the new season will connect further to the events of Season 1, or if we’ll see Ed again. However, viewers can expect another thrilling season with the engaging and talented character we first met before.
