The 2000s were a golden age for teen TV, with popular shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The O.C., and Gossip Girl. Among them, one show was a huge success and launched a whole franchise on The CW.
Based on the popular book series of the same name, The Vampire Diaries premiered on September 10, 2009, and quickly became a cultural hit. Over eight seasons and 171 episodes, the show ran until 2017. Even nine years later, it remains popular worldwide, consistently appearing in Netflix’s top charts, according to FlixPatrol.
Currently, The Vampire Diaries is ninth most popular on Netflix worldwide. While it’s not a big hit in the United States, it’s become very popular in Europe and Latin America. It reached number two in both Brazil and Romania on February 1st. You can also find it at number nine on Prime Video in Romania and number ten on Viaplay in Finland.
Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson, the creator of Dawson’s Creek, developed the fantasy series. The show launched Nina Dobrev’s career, as she played the main character, Elena Gilbert. Throughout the series, she also played Elena’s look-alike, Katerina Petrova, and Amara. Dobrev left the show after its sixth season but made a final appearance as a guest star in the series finale.
Alongside Nina Dobrev, The Vampire Diaries featured Paul Wesley as Stefan Salvatore and Ian Somerhalder as Damon Salvatore, two vampires who appear as young men. The show also starred Steven R. McQueen as Jeremy, Elena’s brother; Sara Canning as Elena and Jeremy’s aunt, Jemma Sommers; Kat Graham as Bonnie; Candice King as Caroline; Michael Trevino as Tyler; and Matthew Davis as Alaric.
The Vampire Diaries Became a Franchise
The Vampire Diaries quickly became a hit show. The first season was The CW’s most popular, and it remained that way for a long time. Given how many people loved it, it’s easy to see why the show launched a whole universe of related content.
Around the same time the fifth season of the popular show aired in October 2013, its spin-off, The Originals, premiered. The Originals followed beloved characters from the original series, including Klaus, Elijah, and Rebecca, and ran for five seasons until August 2018.
As a fan of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, I was excited to see where the universe went next with Legacies. This show picks up not long after The Originals ended, and it centers around Hope Mikaelson, a character we first met in Season 5 of The Vampire Diaries. It’s a bit of a spinoff of The Originals, and it’s fun to see familiar faces pop up – characters like Alaric, Rebeca, Jeremy, Klaus, and even Caroline make appearances, which really connects it to the shows we already loved.
I was so excited when they first announced this new series back in February 2020! But when Legacies ended, everything got stalled, and honestly, I haven’t heard a single thing about it since. I’m still hoping it’ll happen, but it’s been a while now.
Julie Plec, the creator of the show, revealed in July 2024 that she’s considering a new series. She confirmed she has a story she’d like to explore, and believes both the characters and Warner Bros. have more stories to tell. She’s hoping for the chance to revisit the universe and create another installment, and is waiting to see if it will happen.
