At its heart, One Piece is a pirate adventure about Monkey D. Luffy and his crew searching for the legendary treasure left behind by Gol D. Roger, with the ultimate goal of becoming the King of the Pirates. A key part of what’s made Eiichiro Oda’s story so popular for almost three decades is the existence of Devil Fruits. These fruits give people amazing abilities, but with a significant drawback: whoever eats one can never swim again.
The Devil Fruits in One Piece – categorized as Paramecia, Zoan, or Logia – are generally quite interesting. Some give users simple, direct abilities, such as increased strength with the Strong-Strong Fruit. Others are more unusual, like the Hollow-Hollow Fruit, which lets a person create ghosts that can pass through solid objects, explode, or even weaken someone’s spirit.
Some Devil Fruits in One Piece are considered truly terrible. This is often because the powers they grant are either completely unhelpful or only work in very limited situations. Sometimes, the abilities cause more problems than they solve, are hard to manage, or are just strange and unpleasant. Regardless of the reason, characters who have eaten these particular Devil Fruits are generally seen as having the worst luck.
10. Hito Hito no Mi (Human-Human Fruit)
Tony Tony Chopper had a lucky break with the Human-Human Fruit! It boosted his intelligence and let him change into a human or a human-reindeer hybrid. But for regular humans in the world of One Piece, this fruit is best avoided. It wouldn’t give them any new powers, just make them… more human, and at the cost of being able to swim. Plus, a lot of Chopper’s impressive skills actually come from the Rumble Balls he invented.
9. Fuku Fuku no Mi (Garb-Garb Fruit)
Most Devil Fruits in One Piece give users strong attack or defense abilities, but the Garb-Garb Fruit is different. It lets Kin’emon create clothes and accessories from things like leaves and rocks. While this can be helpful for changing outfits or going undercover, it doesn’t offer any fighting power. It also relies on having leaves or rocks nearby to work, and any clothes created vanish as soon as they’re removed.
8. Sara Sara no Mi (Sala-Sala Fruit), Model: Axolotl
In the Punk Hazard storyline, Caesar Clown gave Smiley, his pet slime creature, the Sala-Sala Fruit, which transformed him into an axolotl Zoan type Devil Fruit user. This fruit grants powerful healing powers, but ironically doesn’t allow the user to actually swim. While they can breathe underwater like an axolotl, anyone who eats this fruit still loses their ability to float or propel themselves through water. This means if they fall in the ocean, they’ll survive, but be stuck on the seabed and unable to use their abilities.
7. Woshu Woshu no Mi (Wash-Wash Fruit)
Throughout most of One Piece, Vice Admiral Tsuru has been a background figure, often seen talking with other high-ranking Marines like Sengoku and Garp. But during the battle at Marineford, she briefly took action, using her unusual Wash-Wash Fruit ability to defeat pirates. This power allows her to literally wash and hang enemies like laundry, and it also supposedly removes some of the darkness from their hearts. While Tsuru considers the ability effective, she admits it’s disturbing to watch.
6. Muchi Muchi no Mi (Whip-Whip Fruit)
Rear Admiral Kujaku, Tsuru’s granddaughter, has a unique ability thanks to the Whip-Whip Fruit: she can control anything – people or objects – with a whip. She proved this by moving buildings while rescuing Koby from Pirate Island. However, her power relies entirely on having the whip; without it, she’s just a regular Marine who can’t swim. Plus, using the ability always causes pain to whatever is struck by the whip.
5. Nori Nori no Mi (Ride-Ride Fruit)
Vice Admiral Bluegrass of the Marines has the Ride-Ride Fruit ability, which lets her control anything she’s currently riding. This proved useful during the Egghead arc when she commandeered a hacked Pacifista. However, the power has significant limitations. She can only control one thing at a time because she needs to be on top of it, and she remains vulnerable to attacks even while using her ability. Plus, the idea of her controlling a sentient being is disturbing.
4. Gocha Gocha no Mi (Pile-Pile Fruit)
Charlotte Newshi has the ability to combine with other people after consuming the Pile-Pile Fruit. However, this power has several limitations. First, it doesn’t work if he’s by himself. Second, merging with weaker individuals won’t significantly increase his strength. Third, it’s unknown whether he needs someone’s permission to merge with them, or if he can force it. Finally, it’s a mystery what would happen if he merged with someone who also has a Devil Fruit power – nobody except Blackbeard has ever been able to successfully use two different Devil Fruit abilities at once.
3. Baku Baku no Mi (Munch-Munch Fruit)
The Munch-Munch Fruit seems strange, but its ability allows the user – currently Wapol – to eat absolutely anything, even gaining the qualities of what they consume, like absorbing traits from living creatures. However, this power comes with a terrible curse: constant, unending hunger. Wapol will never feel satisfied, and such extreme discomfort isn’t worth having this unusual ability.
2. Beta Beta no Mi (Sticky-Sticky Fruit)
Okay, so Trebol from the Dressrosa arc of One Piece was seriously tough! His Devil Fruit power – the Sticky-Sticky Fruit – let him create endless amounts of… well, slime. He could stick to anything with it and even turn it into weapons. It’s no wonder he was one of Doflamingo’s top guys. But honestly? Watching him use that power was just gross! If there was a way to get rid of Devil Fruits forever, I think the Sticky-Sticky Fruit should be first on the list.
1. Jake Jake no Mi (Jacket-Jacket Fruit)
The Jacket-Jacket Fruit allows the user to transform into a living jacket and take control of anyone who wears them, effectively borrowing the wearer’s skills and abilities. A prime example of this unsettling power is when Kelly Funk controlled his brother Bobby during a fight in the Corrida Colosseum. However, this ability only works if the user knows someone strong who is willing to wear them and give up control of their own body, as seen in One Piece.
