As a huge film fan, I’m so excited to see The Fellowship of the Ring is celebrating its 25th anniversary! It’s amazing how this incredible fantasy world continues to expand. We’re getting a prequel series with The Rings of Power on Prime Video, and even more stories are on the way with spin-off films like The Hunt for Gollum and Shadows of the Past. It’s a fantastic time to be a fan!
Look, the newer movies are great, and the franchise has a lot going for it, but Peter Jackson’s first three films? They’re still the best fantasy movies ever made, in my opinion. And Samwise Gamgee, played by Sean Astin, is such an amazing character. There are so many lines that stick with you, but that speech early on in The Fellowship of the Ring? It hits just as hard today as it did back in 2001 – it’s truly iconic.
Sam Gamgee’s Best Quote Made Fantasy History
Samwise Gamgee has many memorable moments throughout the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and one of the most powerful happens at the end of The Fellowship of the Ring. When Frodo Baggins decides to continue his journey to Mordor alone, Sam chases after him. He nearly drowns trying to reach Frodo’s boat, and when they finally reunite, Frodo asks why Sam would risk so much. Sam simply replies: “I made a promise, Mr. Frodo. A promise. ‘Don’t you leave him, Samwise Gamgee.’ And I don’t intend to break it.”
Sam’s feelings remind us of how everything started – when he unexpectedly got involved in the perilous journey to destroy the One Ring. He overheard Gandalf talking with Frodo at Bag End and was immediately brought on board as part of the group. Gandalf gave him a single, firm instruction: “Stay with him, Samwise Gamgee.”
Sam had proven his loyalty time and again by the end of The Fellowship of the Ring. Initially, the mission was simply to get the Ring to Rivendell, hoping Elrond and the elves could figure out what to do with it. Everyone talks about Frodo carrying the Ring to Mordor and Aragorn leading the fight against Sauron, but honestly, I think Samwise Gamgee is the real hero of The Lord of the Rings. He just represents everything good worth protecting – a little bit of hope and goodness in a world that’s getting darker and darker. He’s the one who truly inspired me.
Among the members of the Fellowship, Sam is unique in his unwavering focus on their mission. While others falter – Boromir succumbs to temptation with fatal consequences, Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas, and Gandalf become consumed by the war, and Pippin and Merry are captured but manage to help defeat Isengard – even Frodo struggles at the crucial moment. Only Sam consistently stays dedicated to completing the quest from start to finish.
Sam is the only member of the group consistently preparing for their return home, carefully saving food even when Frodo thinks they’ll never see the Shire again. He keeps everyone focused on what they’re fighting for during difficult times, and ultimately, he adapts to life back in Hobbiton more easily than anyone else.
We can’t forget Sam’s unforgettable act on Mount Doom: lifting Frodo and carrying him the rest of the way up the treacherous slope. Like when he first set out with Frodo, Sam demonstrates that true friendship is what helps us get through even the toughest challenges – whether it’s sharing a load or supporting someone who is struggling.
What’s Next for the Lord of the Rings Franchise?
Even though the Lord of the Rings movies came out 25 years ago, they remain incredibly popular. J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved fantasy world continues to capture imaginations, and now Warner Bros. Pictures is planning new movies and shows to expand the story. These spin-offs will delve into lesser-known parts of Middle-earth and may even feature characters fans already love.
Scheduled for release on December 17, 2027, this new film revisits a key part of The Fellowship of the Ring – the hunt for Gollum and the One Ring. Andy Serkis is back as Gollum and will also be directing! Familiar faces like Ian McKellen (Gandalf) and Elijah Wood (Frodo) are confirmed to return, and Jamie Dornan will take on the role of Aragorn, replacing Viggo Mortensen.
Okay, so I just heard about this new Lord of the Rings project, and it’s a bit of a wild card. Stephen Colbert – yeah, that Stephen Colbert – co-wrote the script with his son and Philippa Boyens, who worked on the original films. It’s called The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past, and apparently, it’s going to cover parts of The Fellowship of the Ring that Peter Jackson left out, like the Hobbits’ trek through the Old Forest. And get this – everyone’s buzzing that we might finally see Tom Bombadil on the big screen! He was a big miss in Jackson’s trilogy, so this could be huge.
I’m hearing exciting news – it sounds like we might get even more stories from the world of Middle-earth! Apparently, there’s talk of spin-offs, and even bigger, they’re hoping to get the rights to adapt The Silmarillion. For years, the Tolkien estate has been very careful about letting anyone create adaptations of that book, which is full of the history and myths of Middle-earth. But things might be changing, and if they do, The Silmarillion could become a whole series of movies, launching a fantastic new chapter for Lord of the Rings! I, for one, am really hoping it happens.
And that’s not all – don’t forget the current Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series on Prime Video! It tells the story of the Second Age, featuring the epic war between Elves and Sauron, and how the One Ring was created. Season 3 of The Rings of Power will be available November 11th, and plans are in place for at least five seasons overall.
I’m really excited about the new Lord of the Rings series starting up, but honestly, nothing will ever beat Peter Jackson’s original movies for me – those characters are just unforgettable! And Samwise Gamgee? He’s always been a favorite. Such a sweet guy with incredible courage; he really stood out.
