I’ve always been fascinated by antiwar films, and Stanley Kubrick really stands out to me. It’s rare for a director to make three movies that critics love, but he did! I first saw Paths of Glory – he made it in 1957 – and it was incredibly powerful. It showed how French commanders in World War I would actually order the execution of their own soldiers, just to make a point and scare the others into fighting.
In 1987, Stanley Kubrick directed the acclaimed war film Full Metal Jacket, known for its brutal depiction of Marine Corps training and its devastating impact on the recruits. But between his two powerful war films, he also created a comedy that carries a surprisingly strong antiwar message, just as impactful as either of his more serious works.
Dr. Strangelove Found Humor In Terrible Situations
Released on January 29, 1964, Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb is still a sharply funny and relevant film. It satirizes the absurdity of politics and war, showing how easily everything can be ruined by simple mistakes and miscommunications.
Stanley Kubrick’s film is a darkly funny and thought-provoking satire about politics and the dangers of war. Inspired by Peter George’s novel Red Alert, Kubrick transformed a serious story about nuclear conflict into a unique and often absurd comedy.
From the beginning, Kubrick signaled he was taking a unique approach to the story by casting Peter Sellers to play Dr. Strangelove – and two other roles, too. The film takes place during the height of Cold War tensions, depicting a situation where the United States and the Soviet Union are dangerously close to starting a nuclear war.
Kubrick brought in well-known actors to play the politicians and military leaders grappling with the decision of whether to attack the Soviet Union. George C. Scott played General Buck Turgidson, the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Sterling Hayden starred as Brigadier General Jack D. Ripper, a deeply paranoid Air Force base commander.
Notably, Peter Sellers played three distinct roles in the film. These included a nuclear war expert—a former Nazi suffering from alien hand syndrome, which caused him to unexpectedly give the Nazi salute—as well as U.S. President Merkin Muffley and British RAF exchange officer Lionel Mandrake.
Ultimately, Stanley Kubrick’s film highlights the absurdity of the War Room and demonstrates how easily a small group of people could make the decision to end the world. A significant portion of the movie unfolds on a bomber plane, featuring comedian Slim Pickens as the pilot in command, and he’s the one we see in the film’s very last scene.
In a darkly comedic and unbelievable turn of events, Slim triggers the apocalypse by riding a nuclear missile like a horse as it hurtles towards Earth. The scene cuts to the War Room, where officials brace for the inevitable as a series of explosions signal the world’s destruction.
Robin Williams Praised Stanley Kubrick’s Comic Skills
Although Stanley Kubrick wasn’t known for comedies, his film Dr. Strangelove was a huge critical success and highly regarded by other filmmakers. The movie received overwhelmingly positive reviews, earning a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences loved it too, giving it a score of 94%.
The film received four Academy Award nominations – for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor – and won two BAFTA Awards, including Best Film. In 1989, it was recognized as a significant work of cinema and added to the National Film Registry as one of its earliest inductees.
I have to say, the sheer respect surrounding Dr. Strangelove is palpable. Even Robin Williams, a comedic genius himself, had nothing but amazing things to say about Stanley Kubrick in an AFI tribute. He specifically highlighted Peter Sellers as the most impactful actor in movie history, and rightly so, considering the brilliance of Sellers’ performance in this film. It really underscores just how masterful Dr. Strangelove truly is.
Seeing one actor portray so many distinct and fully realized characters – especially Dr. Strangelove – was incredible. The film’s dark humor, combined with its serious theme of global annihilation, really resonated with me. It showed me that comedy could be both hilarious and profoundly impactful.
Dr. Strangelove Lives & Dies With Peter Seller’s Performance
As Robin Williams pointed out, Peter Sellers was the driving force behind the success of this film. He brilliantly portrayed three completely distinct characters, including the U.S. President, whom he played as a relatable, yet dignified, figure.
When portraying Lionel Mandrake, he acted as a fidgety and anxious character, a stark contrast to Sterling Hayden’s portrayal of a military man descending into paranoia as the war continued. Despite their differences, both performances were quite distinct from his most memorable role in the movie.
Dr. Strangelove was a former Nazi scientist brought to the US after World War II through Operation Paperclip to assist with military planning. Despite being recruited by the Americans, he still exhibited clear Nazi sympathies, demonstrated through involuntary salutes and outbursts like shouting “Mein Führer!”
Peter Sellers was a remarkably talented actor, receiving praise for films like Being There, The Pink Panther, and Lolita. However, his performance in Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb was truly exceptional, and it’s largely due to his work that the film is now considered a classic.
