With several exciting projects on the horizon for Jessie Buckley, it’s a great time to look back at some of her most memorable roles. Buckley is a remarkably versatile actor, proven by her work in diverse films like the unsettling thriller I’m Thinking of Ending Things, the uplifting musical Wild Rose, and the powerful true-story drama Women Talking.
After her acclaimed performance in Hamnet, Jessie Buckley stars in The Bride!, which arrives in theaters on March 6th. She plays a young woman brought back to life as the bride of Frankenstein’s monster (Christian Bale) and embarks on a mission to deliver her own brand of justice.
Many people, myself included, are really excited about The Bride. It’s a fantastic, though somewhat lesser-known, drama that feels especially important to watch now, considering how well Buckley is doing in her career.
The Lost Daughter Is Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Feature Directorial Debut
Maggie Gyllenhaal, an actress known for her roles in films like The Dark Knight and Crazy Heart, makes her feature film directorial debut with The Bride! This psychological drama, which currently has a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, stars Olivia Colman as Leda, a professor taking a vacation in Greece.
A meeting with a young mother causes the main character to think about difficult times in her past. The film shows a younger version of her, through flashbacks, dealing with the challenges of motherhood and balancing it with her work. Both Jessie Buckley and Olivia Coleman received Oscar nominations for their performances in The Lost Daughter, and Maggie Gyllenhaal was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay.
The film The Lost Daughter is beautifully shot and directed, focusing on the viewpoint of the older main character. While some plot points or character decisions might seem confusing, the movie is gripping thanks to its psychological complexity. It powerfully portrays the challenges of new motherhood through the stories of Leda and Nina (Dakota Johnson), exploring these difficulties in a dark and nuanced way.
While there’s no certainty that Maggie Gyllenhaal’s new film, The Bride!, will be a classic, she’s a skilled director. The Lost Daughter showcased both her talent as a filmmaker and Jessie Buckley’s acting abilities, and it leaves audiences eager to see what they create together again.
The Lost Daughter Is Also A Must-See Before Jessie Buckley & Paul Mescal Return To The Oscars
March 2026 will be a significant month for Jessie Buckley. Not only is her new film, The Bride!, being released, but she’s widely expected to win an Oscar for her performance in Hamnet. This makes it a good time to revisit the film that earned her first Oscar nomination. Interestingly, Paul Mescal, who starred alongside Buckley in Hamnet, also appears in The Lost Daughter.
I was really rooting for Paul Mescal to get an Oscar nomination! He played Will, this young guy working a summer job who gets involved with Leda, and also has this complicated affair with Nina. It was so tense because Nina’s husband, Toni – Oliver Jackson-Cohen was amazing at playing a really intimidating character. Even though he didn’t get nominated this time, I really hope he’s still at the Oscars with Jessie Buckley, since they’re both part of a film that’s up for Best Picture. They both deserve to be there!
Mae Abdulbaki of ScreenRant describes The Lost Daughter as “exquisite,” and believes it foreshadows great things from everyone involved. While the Academy likely remembers Jessie Buckley from her recent nomination, to truly appreciate her range, audiences should also watch The Lost Daughter and The Bride!
The Lost Daughter is available to stream on Netflix.
