The timing of Melania Trump’s documentary release is notable, coming amidst a period of political turmoil and the continued release of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein. Despite these events, the film appears to be doing well in cinemas.
The film opened on January 30th to a fantastic response. According to reports, it earned $7.04 million in its first three days, surpassing both expectations and initial projections. Plus, it achieved a significant record.
The documentary’s initial release was a huge success, marking the best debut for a documentary in over ten years. It surpassed the $5 million opening of last year’s After Death. Melania was projected to earn between $3 and $5 million in the US, but it actually performed even better, landing it in third place overall.
Amazon MGM Studios released the documentary in theaters, investing heavily in its success. They initially purchased it for $40 million and then spent another $35 million on advertising. Despite breaking box office records, the film may struggle to turn a profit because theaters take half of the ticket revenue.
The film Melania needs to earn between $40 and $45 million in the United States to cover its costs. Variety reports that the filmmakers likely made money through product licensing to help pay for marketing and promotion.
Following a successful opening weekend, Kevin Wilson, head of domestic theatrical distribution for Amazon MGM, shared that they were pleased with both the strong ticket sales and positive feedback for the film Melania, which performed better than anticipated.
Wilson explained that the film’s early success is a great start, and they expect both it and the upcoming documentary series to remain popular for a long time – far beyond their time in theaters. They’re optimistic that this release strategy will provide lasting value for customers, both for those seeing it in cinemas and for years to come on Prime Video.
Melania Divided Critics and Audiences
The documentary’s success wasn’t a surprise, as many viewers clearly enjoyed it. While critics on Rotten Tomatoes were largely negative, audiences had a very different reaction and generally praised the film. It sparked a lot of debate and differing opinions.
The movie Melania currently has a very low 10% rating on the review website, which is a small increase from its 6% rating earlier this year. Despite this, viewers seem to like it much more, giving it a 99% audience score and a ‘Verified Hot’ designation. It also received an ‘A’ rating from CinemaScore, though it only has a 1.1 out of 10 on IMDb based on over 17,000 reviews.
I just heard about this fascinating new documentary! It’s coming from , and they officially announced it back in January 2025. What’s really interesting is that it has the First Lady’s involvement, and even the President gave it a shout-out on X. He said he’s seen it twice now, the audience loved it, and he thinks everyone should check it out – he called it a “MUST SEE!” I’m definitely intrigued!
Melania is currently playing in theaters.
