If you believed John Prine’s 2020 song “I Remember Everything” was his final original release, you’ll be happy to know that’s not the case. New music is on the way, and the first new song is already available.
The singer-songwriter’s album, “I Remember Everything,” came out soon after his death from COVID-19, and it was incredibly moving – almost too difficult to listen to initially. Its gentle beauty felt like a perfect, though quiet, goodbye to one of America’s most talented songwriters. However, it now appears that this wasn’t a complete farewell after all.
Oh Boy Records, the label John Prine started in 1981, has announced a new release called Found Dogs. This album is a follow-up to his 1995 album, Lost Dogs + Mixed Blessings, which included popular songs like “Lake Marie,” “Ain’t Hurtin’ Nobody,” and “Day Is Done.” There’s even more music coming soon!
Five new John Prine songs arrive just in time to carry us into the end of the year
John Prine is widely recognized as one of America’s best songwriters, and reminders of his talent keep appearing. However, fans haven’t been treated to any new music from him since the release of “I Remember Everything.”
It’s quite common for artists to record songs and hold onto them for a while. Often, these songs don’t quite match the overall feel or tempo of the album they were originally meant for. This was especially true for a songwriter like Prine, who wrote so many songs that not all of them could fit on a single album.
The album Found Dogs is being released on October 9th, just before what would have been the artist’s 80th birthday. It includes ten songs, with four of them being alternate versions of tracks from Lost Dogs…. These include acoustic renditions of “All the Way With You” and “Humidity Built the Snowman.”
A demo recording of “Lake Marie” will also be included. I don’t usually enjoy listening to demos, but this one, with Prine’s relaxed style and obvious affection for the song, could be something special.
The album also features some brand new songs. We first heard “World Without Love,” an energetic and catchy rock song – it’s pretty much about what you’d expect from the title! Benmont Tench, who played keyboards on the Lost Dogs… recordings, adds a beautiful organ layer that gives the song a grand feel.
We haven’t heard the other songs yet, but even just the titles feel like classic Prine. I can already picture the quirky, funny vibe of “Hey Ah Nothing” and the heartfelt emotion in the last song, “My God Thank You, John.” That’s my guess, anyway – I’ll find out for sure when the album comes out in October.
