Alex Comfort, a British scientist who dedicated his life to studying seashells, believed he was creating something that would help end war. The movie centers on the intense and complex love triangle between Comfort, his wife Ruth, and Ruth’s close friend Jane.
For ten years, this unique three-person relationship thrived in a peaceful North London neighborhood, defying traditional expectations. It was here that the ideas and illustrations found in their book – including now-famous sketches of intimate moments between free-spirited individuals – first came to life.

Growing up Irish Catholic in the 70s, my family would never have allowed a book like The Joy of Sex in the house. Because of that, I was totally fascinated by what it represented – it felt like a secret, forbidden world, and I couldn’t help but be drawn to it.
It’s ironic that this book, meant to help couples improve their intimacy, came about because of a complicated and rocky love affair between three people.
For me, the core of what makes this movie so great is how it explores this central relationship. It really surprised me, it genuinely moved me, and honestly, it had me laughing out loud a lot too!
