Sony Pictures and director Zach Cregger just released the first trailer for their new Resident Evil movie. This isn’t a direct adaptation, but rather a reboot that tells a brand-new story within the world of the popular video game series. Austin Abrams, known for his role in Euphoria, stars as the main character.

Written by Bryan Abrams and Shay Hatten (who also worked on John Wick: Chapter 4), the movie follows Bryan, an unlucky medical courier whose simple delivery trip to Raccoon City turns into a terrifying ordeal. When a dangerous outbreak throws the city into chaos, Bryan is forced to fight for his life against mutated creatures and deadly biological hazards.

Okay, so this new movie is really different from other zombie films! The director, Cregger, isn’t going for the typical scares – he’s leaning hard into some seriously disturbing body horror and showing off those T-virus mutations in a way I haven’t seen before. Plus, the cast is amazing; Paul Walter Hauser, Zach Cherry, and Kali Reis are all in it! It’s being made by Constantin Film, Vertigo Entertainment, and even PlayStation Productions, which is pretty cool.

Resident Evil opens exclusively in theaters and IMAX on September 18, 2026.
