When True Detective first aired on HBO in 2014, it had a huge impact on television. True Detective Became An Instant Crime Classic When It Arrived On HBO
It’s easy to forget just how groundbreaking True Detective was when it first aired. This richly detailed Southern Gothic thriller built incredible tension and stood out as a unique crime drama, unlike anything seen before.
As a critic, I can confidently say the first season of True Detective is a genuine masterpiece. It completely changed the game for crime dramas on television with its stunning visuals, incredibly rich story, and the way it played with time. Unfortunately, the show stumbled with season two. While Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams delivered strong performances, the season felt overdone – too much style and a needlessly complicated plot that just didn’t quite work.
Mahershala Ali’s performance helped revive True Detective and restore some of its reputation. However, the show had already fallen from its position as the best crime drama on television, overtaken by a new competitor on Netflix that had taken the lead in creating stylish, director-driven stories within the genre.
Despite past seasons, the HBO anthology series still has potential. Its newest installment, Night Country – which can be seen as a long-awaited fourth season – successfully captures the strong, atmospheric feel of the show’s very first season, though it’s set in a drastically different location.
Jodie Foster delivers a typically outstanding performance as the lead character – an Alaskan police chief investigating a serial killer during the dark polar night. The show True Detective is proving remarkably durable, with season five planned for 2027, and it’s clearly lasted longer than Netflix’s Mindhunter.
Mindhunter Is An Even Better Psychological Crime Thriller Than True Detective
I was genuinely bummed when Netflix decided to put Mindhunter on hold – it was getting expensive to make, apparently. But honestly, while it ran, it was incredible. For me, it’s easily the best psychological crime thriller Netflix has ever put out, and I really think it could go down as one of the greatest shows ever in that genre. It was just that good.
I honestly think Mindhunter is unlike anything else I’ve ever seen. It only lasted two seasons, just 19 episodes, but the way it digs into what makes people commit terrible acts is just… different. Most cop shows, even great ones like True Detective, focus on the detectives solving a local case. But Mindhunter is different – it follows these two FBI agents as they travel around, trying to understand why these crimes happen in the first place, searching for bigger answers. It’s not just about who did it, but why.
Despite being a slower burn, Mindhunter still focuses on unsettling murder cases. What really stands out are the chilling interviews with convicted serial killers who recount their crimes in disturbing detail. While it can be as dark and graphic as True Detective, Mindhunter is also incredibly well-made – a true masterclass in crime drama.
