The Godzilla and Kong franchise has always been well-liked, but Legendary’s MonsterVerse made it even more successful. A new movie, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, is planned, though director Adam Wingard won’t be involved this time.
Adam Wingard’s Godzilla Return Is Possible
The director is currently working on his new science fiction action movie, Onslaught, which he describes as a true reflection of his personal beliefs and worldview. He feels this is the first time he’s been able to fully express himself through a film, for better or worse. Despite being focused on Onslaught, he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of revisiting the Godzilla franchise in the future.
It’s possible. I enjoy a lot of different things – both big spectacle movies and smaller projects. I originally became interested in filmmaking because of those large-scale summer blockbusters, but my tastes have definitely evolved as I’ve gotten older.
As you get into your teens and early twenties, you often start exploring more unusual and artistic films. That exposure definitely shapes your taste, and I enjoy moving between those different types of movies – both mainstream and more independent or experimental – finding appeal in both worlds.
Adam Wingard Revealed How Onslaught & Godzilla Are Different
The previous MonsterVerse movies were huge hits, and the new film promises just as much action. It centers around a highly skilled army sniper who must safeguard her daughter from a group of escaped, genetically engineered super-soldiers from a top-secret base.
Adria Arjona leads the cast of the new film, which also brings back Rebecca Hall and Dan Stevens from Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Director Adam Wingard quipped about the difference in scale between the two projects, saying, “It was a relief not having to worry about Godzilla and King Kong! That simplified things for production.”
I enjoyed making big studio films after The Guest, and it’s been about ten years of doing that. But I reached a point where I was really excited to do a smaller, more personal movie again. I see this film as a satisfying conclusion to a trilogy that started with You’re Next and The Guest, and it felt creatively liberating.
Honestly, I didn’t have a financial safety net, but I realized money brings its own problems too. It was actually really refreshing to go back to a more ‘do-it-yourself’ approach, figuring things out like I used to. As a director, I loved having the freedom to create without a ton of outside influence. That’s really why I took on the project, and it ended up being the most creatively fulfilling filmmaking experience I’ve ever had.
Onslaught premieres in theaters on Sept. 4. .
