The new Yellowstone spin-off, Dutton Ranch, moved forward without Taylor Sheridan, the original show’s creator, contributing as a writer. The cast noticed his absence and the difference in creative direction.
Star Cole Hauser recently shared how difficult it was to film scenes at the Dutton Ranch when Taylor Sheridan wasn’t present, in a new interview.
This happened just before Ed Harris publicly criticized Taylor Sheridan, saying he felt misled about how important his character would be in the series.
Although Sheridan was an executive producer for Dutton Ranch, the arrival of new directors and writers disrupted Hauser’s usual acting approach.
It was tough not having Taylor involved as we tried to collaborate with the new writing and directing team,” said Hauser, 51, in an interview with FilmInside.
Despite most of the original cast being absent, the show’s director, Christina Alexandra Voros, Kelly Reilly, and the character Carter returned, which was enough for Hauser to work with the new challenges.
Things were really different then. The only stable part of our lives was being with Carter, Christina, Kelly, and me.
I thrive on difficult tasks, and this year was definitely demanding. We all worked incredibly hard, and honestly, I didn’t really pay attention to external pressures or worries about the show’s expectations while we were in the thick of it.
Hauser explained that they had to improvise and find creative solutions to tell the story effectively.
I just focused on working incredibly hard with the resources available to me. We had some newer writers, and we all had to quickly learn how to work together effectively to create compelling stories.
‘So I’m proud of what we accomplished and I look forward to doing it again.’
The Daily Mail reached out to Sheridan and Paramount for a response, but they haven’t replied yet.
Dutton Ranch premiered on streaming service Paramount+ on May 15.
The story follows Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler as they head to South Texas from Montana with plans to start their own ranch.
The film also features Annette Bening, Finn Little, Juan Pablo Raba, Jai Courtney, JR Villarreal, Marc Menchaca, and Natalie Alyn Lind.
Hauser made his statements before Harris, age 75, said he was led to believe he’d have a significant role at Dutton Ranch.
Harris has said that once filming for the first season started, he immediately asked his team to remove him from the project.
He explained to Variety at the premiere of Apple TV’s ‘The Dink’ that before committing to the show, he was led to believe it would be a significant role, and that he was one of the four leads. However, that turned out not to be true.
In the series, Harris portrays Everett McKinney, a friendly and upbeat veterinarian. The first season of Dutton Ranch recently concluded, and Harris will be back for season two.
The actor described how they expressed feeling unimportant and underutilized during the first season. The response they received was dismissive – basically just an ‘Oh.’
He admitted he was a bit frustrated with his limited role in the first season, but he’s been told his character will have more to do in the upcoming season two.
Harris remembered filming a bar scene that ended up being removed from the show, and he was really frustrated about it.
He described a scene where he was talking with Beth Dutton at a bar when Rip Wheeler interrupted, telling him, “Okay, Everett, it’s your turn.”
‘I walk up to the mic, and they cut it. They cut the song out. I’m going, “F*** you, people.”‘
Harris explained that producers removed the scene because it felt too cheerful given the episode’s somber conclusion.
The actor, who had been working for a long time, stated he believed the event gave him grounds to cancel his contract.
It’s unclear if the star intends to exit the show.
Okay, seriously, Taylor Sheridan is everywhere right now, and it’s amazing! He didn’t just create Yellowstone, which I’m completely obsessed with, but he’s built this whole universe around it! I mean, Dutton Ranch, 1883, 1923, and now Landman… he’s the mastermind behind it all, and honestly, I can’t get enough! He’s basically dominating television at this point, and I’m here for it!

Kevin Costner’s departure from Yellowstone back in 2024. There was a lot of talk about disagreements behind the scenes, and it really grabbed everyone’s attention.
