Supergirl confirms digital release date only a month after cinema debut

The movie Supergirl, directed by Craig Gillespie (known for Cruella), will soon be available to rent or buy online. While it hasn’t been a big hit in theaters – earning around $120 million worldwide – you can watch Milly Alcock (from House of the Dragon) as Supergirl, in this film written by Ana Nogueira. If you missed it in cinemas, or want to see it again, it’s coming to digital platforms soon.

You can now pre-order Supergirl from online stores like Amazon for £19.99. It will be available to download digitally on July 27th.

As part of the revamped DC Universe led by James Gunn and Peter Safran, the movie features Supergirl (Kara Zor-El) as a complex character – she’s not quite a traditional hero, enjoying parties and sometimes overindulging in alcohol.

The main character is hired by Ruthye Marye Knoll (Eve Ridley), a young woman determined to get revenge on the man who killed her family. That man is Krem (Matthias Schoenaerts), a ruthless space pirate and trafficker of people.

In addition to Supergirl, the show features Jason Momoa as Lobo, building on his previous work as Aquaman in the DC Universe. Emily Beecham and David Krumholtz play Supergirl’s parents, Zor-El and Alura In-Ze. David Corenswet reprises his role as Superman (Kal-El) from the upcoming 2025 film, and Superman’s super-powered dog, Krypto, also appears.

After the movie didn’t perform well in theaters, Safran explained and supported the overall plan for future DC films.

Okay, so Supergirl didn’t exactly smash box office records, but honestly? The head honchos at DC Studios told the New York Times they’re not worried. They see it as just one piece of a much bigger plan they’ve got cooking for the future – and they still seem really confident about where things are headed.

Supergirl is released on digital on 27 July.
