Davis Collins’ departure from Ransom Canyon may work in Staten Kirkland’s favor after all.
As a big fan of the show, I was really invested in Eoin Macken’s character, so it was a total shock when Davis betrayed Staten at the end of season one – especially after that seeming truce! It definitely leaves a void going into season two. But Josh Duhamel actually thinks Davis’ departure could be a good thing, giving Staten the chance to finally build the life he’s always dreamed of with Quinn O’Grady. I’m intrigued to see how that plays out!
Josh Duhamel told ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley that his character, Staten, isn’t bothered at all by Davis leaving after their complex relationship in the first season.
Josh Duhamel believes Staten is actually relieved the other person is gone, mainly because he didn’t trust him. Staten felt like they’d formed an alliance after years of being rivals. Duhamel doesn’t think Staten misses him at all, and now feels free to fully pursue a relationship with Quinn, which is what he’s always wanted.
The first season concluded with Davis siding with Stanley Kirkland and working to undermine Staten’s leadership of the Double K Ranch. Davis deliberately goaded Staten into hitting him, then used the incident to cast doubt on Staten’s ability to lead, creating a significant power struggle just before Macken left the show as a main character.
Now that Davis was out of the picture, Crowley wondered if Staten was focusing more on Quinn than on keeping the Double K Ranch safe. Duhamel admitted the ranch still mattered to Staten, but explained that his priorities had shifted after experiencing significant personal losses.
Josh Duhamel explained that his character built the ranch as something to leave behind for his family, a legacy after losing his wife and son. Without them, he felt lost and the ranch became his sole purpose – it’s all he knew, but he had no one to share it with. He sees Quinn as someone to share this life with and hopes they can build a future together, maybe even start a family so there’s someone to inherit everything.
If Davis leaving really does create a fresh start, as Duhamel suggests, Quinn might finally be able to take control of her own story instead of just getting caught up in the drama at the ranch. This is especially likely since the second season of Ransom Canyon is already being described as more passionate and intense than the first.
Inspired by Jodi Thomas’ popular books, Ransom Canyon is a story about three families who own ranches and find their lives connected through love, old disagreements, and a struggle to keep their land. Season 2 arrives on Netflix July 23rd.
