Here’s why the Janitor is missing from the Scrubs reboot, according to Zach Braff

Zach Braff, known for his role in Scrubs, has revealed why the character of the Janitor won’t be appearing in the show’s upcoming reboot. The revival, announced this year, will bring back Braff as JD Dorian, along with Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, Judy Reyes, and John C. McGinley.

Ken Jenkins, who played Dr. Kelso, and Neil Flynn, known as The Janitor, haven’t been mentioned in any of the recent cast updates or previews.

When asked about the possibility of seeing either character again, Braff indicated they’d probably appear if the show gets picked up for another season.

In an interview with Esquire, he explained that a second season is likely if the show is renewed, but the status of the first season is still uncertain. He added that episodes 8 and 9 of the initial nine-episode order are currently still in the writing process.

Both of them are keen on the idea, but we need to figure out if we have the resources to pull it off well enough to do justice to Ken and Neil’s story. It’s possible, though I can’t say for sure right now. If we get a second season, it’s definitely something we’d like to explore.

We’re saddened to share that Ted Buckland, played by Sam Lloyd, won’t be appearing in future episodes. Sadly, Sam Lloyd passed away in 2020 after a battle with cancer that began in 2019.

When asked if the show honors the memory of the late actor, Faison confirmed it does. He described Sam as an incredible person.

We’ve started going to a new bar and named it Lloyd’s Tavern as a tribute to Sam, our friend and colleague. It was the production designer’s idea, and we all thought it was a lovely way to remember him. We miss Sam a lot, and it’s been difficult making the show without him.

He was a truly unforgettable part of the team, and we’re absolutely planning an episode to honor him. We’re just figuring out whether it’ll fit into these first nine episodes or if we’ll have to save it for season two. It’s something we really want to do right, so we’re taking our time to decide!

Scrubs season 10 premieres on Hulu and ABC on 25 February 2026.
