Ed Harris, known for his role in the show Dutton Ranch, says he wasn’t fully aware of how big his part would be in the Yellowstone spin-off. He plays Everett McKinney, a character who supports Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, alongside Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser on the Paramount+ series.
In an interview with Variety, Harris admitted that around halfway through the first season, he seriously considered leaving the show. He stated, quite frankly, that he was ready to quit.
I didn’t feel like someone was taking advantage of me, but I definitely felt deceived. Before I committed to the show, I had extensive conversations about the season’s storyline and my character’s role, and I was led to believe I was one of the four leads. That turned out not to be true.
Harris explained that he spoke with the show’s producers, expressing his worry that he wasn’t being given enough to do and felt unimportant.
The actor known for his roles in The Truman Show and Westworld is coming back for another season of the show. This season will have a new leader: Benjamin Cavell will take over as showrunner, replacing Chad Feehan.

Harris mentioned that his role in the second season is expected to be expanded. He admitted feeling slightly frustrated with his limited screen time in the first season, though he thought overall it was a good show.
“It seemed like I was relatively important to the story, but the doing of it didn’t feel that way.”
Honestly, I was so bummed to hear that they cut the bar scene with Harris! Apparently, he was hanging out with Beth Dutton, and Rip Wheeler actually told him to get up and sing – can you imagine?! It sounded like a really fun moment, and I’m disappointed we didn’t get to see it.
Honestly, what bothered me the most was when they cut the scene where my character was supposed to sing in the bar. They had told me about it before I even agreed to take the role, either in the first or second episode, and then it just didn’t happen.
They felt the scene was too cheerful for the episode’s sad ending, which I strongly disagreed with. That disagreement alone was enough for me to consider breaking my contract.
Variety contacted Paramount, the creator of the show Taylor Sheridan, and production company 101 Studios for comment on Harris’s statements, but hasn’t heard back yet.
