Season two of The Undeclared War will reveal a new side to Danny Patrick, the character played by Simon Pegg. The six-episode series is returning to Channel 4 after a four-year break, with Pegg reprising his role as the Director of Operations at GCHQ.
The first season featured intense cyber battles, political scheming, and dangerous spy missions. But the upcoming season will show a new, unexpected side of one of the main characters.
The show ended on a suspenseful note in 2022, leaving viewers wondering what would happen next. The final scene featured satellite photos of an unknown plane flying towards Britain, suggesting a possible Russian attack was about to begin.
Things were moving fast, and I didn’t have much time to figure out if this threat was real. Honestly, it felt like the whole country – and my team – was on the line. Then, to make things even worse, Vadim, someone we really trusted, seemed to have been captured. It left us with a ton of questions and no easy answers.
Simon Pegg shared that the second season of the show begins right after the events of the first season. He jokingly noted that his character, Danny, seems to have gotten a haircut during the break.

During the first series of the show, I couldn’t get a haircut because I was committed to another project, which resulted in a pretty wild hairstyle – basically, ‘COVID hair.’ I was glad to finally be able to change it up. But that’s not the biggest transformation Danny’s going through.
The first season of the show mostly kept things focused on Danny’s job at GCHQ – it was all about the pressure he was under at work. But Season Two is cool because we finally get to see what his life is like outside of that. As an actor, it’s been really fun digging into who Danny is as a person, since in Season One, we only ever saw him ‘on the clock,’ you know? He was always in work mode.

I spoke with our director, Paul McGuigan, and he mentioned that while watching the first season, he often wondered about Danny’s life outside of work – what he’d be like on a bus or just relaxing at home. It was fascinating to see a more personal side of him, revealing his everyday life is actually quite normal.
Danny appears calm, but he’s definitely been affected by everything that’s happened. He’s become more subdued over the years working at the EMC. He used to be more cheerful, but dealing with repeated threats has taken a toll on him.
Danny’s personal struggles are largely explored through his marriage with Barbara (Siân Brooke). This season delves deeper into their relationship, showing how the demands of Danny’s work impact them both at home.
Simon Pegg spoke highly of his co-star, Siân Phillips. He said they had instant chemistry and that she was completely dedicated to her performance, even when not directly in the shot. He noted that during emotionally charged scenes between their characters, Danny and Barbara, she consistently gave her all.
The show will also bring back several popular actors. Hannah Khalique-Brown returns as the talented coder Saara Parvin, alongside Alex Jennings as David Neal, Ed Stoppard as Richard Marston, and Danny Sapani as Charlie Francis – who is both GCHQ’s Head of Security and a longtime friend of Danny’s.
The second season features a new character, Lieutenant Colonel Roz Cavendish, played by Chloe Pirrie, who is in charge of Rapid Response. Her introduction will likely change how things work within the team, creating competition between her and Danny as they both try to lead.
Simon loved acting alongside Chloe. He said their scenes together were great, especially the playful competition between their characters, Roz and Danny.
I’m really excited for the next season of The Undeclared War! It sounds like things are going to be even more intense than before. We’ll see some familiar characters come back, meet some new ones, and finally get a better look into what makes Danny tick, all while Britain is still facing some serious threats. I can’t wait!
