The recent return of The Rookie offers a glimpse of what’s to come – and some potential challenges. The show’s next season (2025-2026) was significant in several ways. It began with an ambitious opening sequence filmed entirely on location in Prague, which is rare for network television. When John Nolan and his team returned home to Mid-Wilshire, they found things had changed, notably with Tim Bradford taking on the role of Watch Commander.
The team behind The Rookie faced a lot of difficulties during its eighth season, both at work – dealing with some very strange cases – and in their personal lives, like Wesley’s final meeting with Monica. Despite some issues, the show performed well and remained a popular program for ABC. However, a recent extended cut released on Hulu highlights one of its weaknesses.
The Rookie Season 8, Episode 10’s Extended Cut Makes It So Much Better
A new version of The Rookie Season 8, Episode 10, “His Name Was Martin,” is now available on Hulu! This updated cut includes over five extra minutes of footage not shown in the original broadcast. The added scenes primarily show more interactions between characters at Mid-Wilshire station. Known as one of the most intense episodes of the season—dealing with a large influx of people needing detox assistance—this version also features an extended conversation between Wade Grey and Bailey Nune, plus other new content.
The story follows the relationship between Nyla Harper and Miles Penn, and now includes a new romantic scene between Bradford and Lucy Chen that hints at trouble ahead.
The extended cut of The Rookie Season 8, Episode 10 really shows how important it is for the show to make the most of its time. Although the episode itself is good, many viewers found Dash’s storyline distracting when it first aired. Beckett Hawley had only been a minor character up until then, and while fun side plots are welcome, the original broadcast could have focused more on the main characters’ reactions to the difficult case if Dash hadn’t been included. As The Rookie moves into Season 9, the writers should definitely keep this in mind.
The Rookie Season 9 Needs To Focus On Its Main Characters
Like most popular procedural dramas, The Rookie thrives on its well-developed characters. The creator assembled a diverse cast, and while some – like Nolan, Bradford, and Chen – naturally get more focus, the show always intended to give everyone their own storylines. However, season 8 sometimes fell short in this area, particularly with characters like Celina Juarez who didn’t have much individual development, and Penn, who was strangely absent at times. For the show to continue succeeding long-term, it’s crucial that all characters, especially newer ones, are given meaningful arcs.
Bringing back familiar guest stars is still a good idea for The Rookie, but the show shouldn’t prioritize them over its main characters. As Celina adjusts to her job and Penn moves beyond being a rookie, they need more screen time. They could become the future leads, potentially as some of the original cast members move on. This also applies to other established characters like Harper and Wesley, who deserve more focus as the show goes forward.
