Frieren Unveils New ‘Golden Age’ Design in Official First Look Ahead of Season 3 Release

The series has consistently received high praise, often being called a modern classic of the past decade. Now, the main character, an elf, is reimagined as the subject of Johannes Vermeer’s famous 1665 painting, Girl with a Pearl Earring.

A renowned Dutch painting is coming to Japan as part of an art exhibition starting August 21st. To celebrate, the exhibition is partnering with a popular Japanese anime, reimagining its main character, Frieren, as the subject of the famous painting, and offering related artwork and merchandise.

Frieren Becomes the Girl with a Pearl Earring to Celebrate Vermeer in Japan’s Art Exhibition

On Tuesday, May 26th, the official X (formerly Twitter) account for Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End shared a piece of artwork. It shows the millennium-old mage depicted as the famous girl in Johannes Vermeer’s painting, Girl with a Pearl Earring.

Alongside the announcement, a Japanese exhibition dedicated to Vermeer’s art was revealed. The exhibit will feature Vermeer’s original paintings alongside artwork inspired by his style, created by Tsukasa Abe for the series Frieren, and merchandise from a popular character.

Miffy is a popular character created by Dutch artist Dick Bruna in 1955. She actually inspired the creation of Hello Kitty and other characters from Sanrio. To coincide with the Vermeer exhibit, Miffy plush dolls dressed like the girl in Vermeer’s famous painting, Girl with a Pearl Earring, will be sold. The largest doll will cost around $34 USD.

While details are still under wraps, the teams behind the project have hinted at a thrilling collaboration between their popular series and a classic character. The writer, Kanehito Yamada, and artist, Tsukasa Abe, have shared their excitement and appreciation for this unique pairing, calling it an honor to see their creation alongside such a well-known figure.

I’m incredibly honored to have my work displayed with such a famous painting as Girl with a Pearl Earring. I’m excited about this exhibition and the chance for visitors to see Vermeer’s incredible work firsthand.

I’m still buzzing from the incredible experience! Getting to see so many of Vermeer’s paintings up close was amazing, and being able to create my own art inspired by his work – and learn from it – was a real gift. I’m so grateful for the opportunity.

The partnership with Vermeer is really important because it shows a key part of who she is.

Johannes Vermeer’s most famous painting, often called the “Mona Lisa of the North,” is celebrated for its beautiful use of light and shadow, creating a sense of depth and intrigue. Similarly, the character Frieren, despite being shown in many different ways, remains enigmatic. Her long life has given her over a thousand years of history and experience.

With fans sharing artwork inspired by the character Frieren in the style of Vermeer, many have jokingly suggested that the long-lived elf might have secretly posed for paintings throughout history. Given Frieren’s relaxed approach to life and her dedication to collecting magical texts, the idea doesn’t seem so unlikely!

An exhibition featuring collaborations inspired by the art of Vermeer will be on display at the Nakanoshima Museum of Art in Osaka, Japan, from August 21st to September 27th this year.
