After 4-Year Wait, Netflix’s The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo Adaptation Finally Gets Major Update With Anna Kendrick

I’m so thrilled to hear that they’re finally making The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo into a movie or series! They’ve been passionate about bringing great books to life for a while now, and I know they’ll do Taylor Jenkins Reid’s story justice. It’s been a long wait, but it’s really happening now!

Originally published in 2017, the historical drama novel went through several development stages for a television adaptation. After Freeform and Fox 21 Television Studios initially acquired the rights in 2019 but didn’t produce a show, Netflix obtained them in 2022. Now, according to reports, the adaptation is finally happening, with Anna Kendrick set to direct the series, titled The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.

What to Expect From The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo?

I remember when Netflix first announced they were adapting this story back in March 2022 – it sounded promising, and they were planning it as a full-length movie with Liz Tigelaar handling the script. Things shifted, though. Leslye Headland came on board to direct, but she revealed earlier this year that she’s moved on and isn’t involved anymore. It’s always a bit concerning when a director steps away like that, leaving the project’s future a little uncertain.

The project was put on hold, but now Kendrick is teaming up with Netflix again, three years after directing her first film, Woman of the Hour. Francesca Sloan is working on the screenplay again, and the film will be produced by Liza Chasin of 3Dot Productions, along with Brad Mendelsohn from Circle Management + Productions and David Hinojosa.

The new movie, based on a popular book, centers around a former Hollywood star named Evelyn. She’s giving a rare interview to a young journalist, and during their conversation, she reveals secrets about her past. As Evelyn recounts stories of her seven husbands and the drama of Hollywood, she exposes surprising and often scandalous truths about herself and those around her.

Taylor Jenkins Reid is a bestselling author with over 24 million copies of her books sold globally. Her novel, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, is being adapted into a feature film, following the successful television adaptation of her 2019 novel, Daisy Jones & The Six. The ten-episode limited series, produced by Prime Video, was a critical and popular success, earning numerous Emmy nominations.

Taylor Jenkins Reid is also known for popular books like Malibu Rising and Carrie Soto Is Back, and her newest novel, Atmosphere, is scheduled to come out in 2025.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo doesn’t have a release date yet, but it will debut on Netflix.
