The Who’s long goodbye may not be ending anytime soon after all

The film Never Say Never Again marked Sean Connery’s last appearance as James Bond. While it’s not a comparison to Bond himself, or actors like Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend, both Daltrey and Townshend haven’t ruled out continuing to perform live, either solo or with The Who.

Last summer, when the band announced they were touring the USA for the last time, many fans remembered what they thought was the band’s final tour back in 1982. That was 44 years ago, and it made people wonder about this new ‘farewell’ tour.

Everyone always assumed the band would finish their current tour with shows in the UK and Europe, but those plans are still being confirmed. Roger Daltrey recently suggested a possible schedule for those final shows, and also hinted that The Who might not be breaking up for good after that.

I just read a new Rolling Stone interview with Roger Daltrey, and it sounds like The Who’s tour is now planned for 2027. He mentioned Pete Townshend needed another knee surgery, and Roger’s not feeling 100% either, which isn’t too shocking considering they’re both in their eighties now – Pete’s 82 and Roger’s 81!

The Who will continue to rock on live

Although The Who have finished touring, the band isn’t disbanding and may still perform live. Roger Daltrey explained they’d be open to doing occasional concerts, especially for causes they believe in.

I just want to be clear – we’re definitely not stopping altogether! It sounds like The Teenage Cancer Trust will likely be a big focus for us going forward, which is fantastic. And, Roger Daltrey is planning some solo shows in the US this summer, so that’s something to look forward to as well.

The Who have recently released a new live album called Live at Eden Project. The album features recordings from their summer concerts where they performed with a full orchestra. Specifically, it captures their 2023 performance at the Eden Project in Cornwall, UK, with backing from the Heart of England Philharmonic Orchestra.

Honestly, The Who’s music just begs for a really full, layered sound – it really adds something special, not just a flashy effect. This new album is packed with 24 tracks, a ton of their classic hits, and it’s a total rush from beginning to end. I couldn’t stop listening!

Many bands struggle with knowing when to retire, but The Who seem to understand it’s time to take things easier. They’re doing this deliberately, and still plan to perform live whenever possible. As long as they can still play well and deliver a great show, Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend aren’t ruling out future performances.
