Disney is revisiting the classic Inspector Gadget franchise with a new movie, more than twenty years after the last live-action films. Recent news suggests they’re considering a well-known comedic actor to play the lead role in this latest reboot.
Okay, so I’m hearing some interesting buzz about a potential Inspector Gadget reboot! Reliable industry scooper Daniel Richtman is reporting that Will Ferrell – yes, the guy from Saturday Night Live and Step Brothers – is in early talks to play the iconic detective. Apparently, Sean Anders, who directed Daddy’s Home, is being considered to direct. Now, before you get too excited, this is still just a rumor. Neither Ferrell nor Disney has officially confirmed anything yet, but a Ferrell-led Inspector Gadget? I’m cautiously optimistic!
Will Ferrell Could Become the Next Inspector Gadget
Two live-action Inspector Gadget films have been made, with different actors playing the famous detective. Matthew Broderick, known from The Cable Guy, starred in the first movie in 1999, alongside Rupert Everett as Dr. Claw and as Penny. While the film earned $134 million in theaters—less than Disney hoped for—it later gained a dedicated fanbase on home video.
The sequel, Inspector Gadget 2, came out on video and DVD in 2003. Though it continued the story from the first film starring Matthew Broderick, French Stewart took on the role of Inspector Gadget this time. Critics generally weren’t impressed, though they felt it was a bit closer to the original cartoon. This means Broderick and Stewart are currently the only actors to play Inspector Gadget in live-action movies, but Will Ferrell may soon join them if the planned reboot moves forward with its reported casting.
It’s Time for Inspector Gadget to Return
Look, there have been a few Inspector Gadget movies over the years, but they’ve all been animated. The most recent one I can think of is Inspector Gadget’s Biggest Caper Ever, which came out on DVD and Blu-ray back in 2005. Interestingly, Maurice LaMarche, who was the perfect Chief Quimby in the original cartoon, actually played Inspector Gadget in that film – and he’d done the voice for Gadget in a couple of earlier animated features too, like Inspector Gadget: Gadget’s Greatest Gadgets and Inspector Gadget’s Last Case.
The Inspector Gadget brand reappeared on television in 2015 with a new animated series on Teletoon and Boomerang, called Inspector Gadget 2.0. The show ran for two seasons, ending in 2018, and the franchise has been inactive since then. However, there have been rumors that Disney is considering a reboot as a live-action movie. In 2019, a project with writers from Saturday Night Live, Mikey Day and Street Seidell, was reported, but it didn’t move forward.
