Jake Gyllenhaal’s Sequel to Prime Video’s 37-Year-Old Remake Will Have a Much Bigger Scale

Prime Video put out a new version of the classic film starring Jake Gyllenhaal in 2024. The movie was a big hit, leading to discussions about a sequel.

Jake Gyllenhaal is returning as Elwood Dalton, a retired UFC fighter working as a bouncer in Florida. However, Doug Liman won’t be directing the sequel; instead, Ilya Naishuller, known for his work on Nobody, will take the director’s chair. Naishuller hinted that Road House 2 will be significantly larger in scope than the first film released in 2024.

Everything in Road House 2 Will Be Bigger

The 2024 remake was full of action and proved to be a hit with audiences. Director Naishuller explained that when working on an established franchise, the goal isn’t to reinvent it, but to contribute to the existing story while satisfying longtime fans and attracting new ones. He compared it to his other successful action series on Prime Video, featuring John Cena and Idris Elba.

You know, when I heard about Road House 2, the director mentioned Amazon basically gave him the green light to go all out. And honestly, that was exciting to hear! He said it’s not always about adding more of your personal touch – sometimes, all those extra ideas can actually pull you away from what’s working. It reminded me of what Jake Gyllenhaal was saying too, about how they were approaching the update.

He mentioned reading a script for Road House 2 that contained something he immediately questioned, wondering how they could address it.

There was a lot of excitement about the movie, especially with Jake Gyllenhaal involved. I remember walking through the set – it wasn’t the first day of filming, but still – and telling Jake what a huge project it was, and how much I was looking forward to everyone seeing it. Everyone was gathered in one hallway, it was quite a scene!

Road House Broke Prime Video Records

Filming for Road House 2 began in October 2025, and the movie is now being edited and finished. While there isn’t a confirmed release date, it’s anticipated to be available on Prime Video in late 2026.

The director initially preferred a traditional cinema release for the film. He felt Amazon had originally agreed to this, but ultimately released it directly on their streaming service. Despite this, Road House proved popular, becoming Prime Video’s most-watched original title within its first two weeks.

So, things got pretty messy with the sequel. First, director Justin Lin left the project, and then, surprisingly, Conor McGregor – the UFC fighter who was supposed to be in it – also exited. It looked like Guy Ritchie might take over for a bit, but his schedule didn’t allow it, and ultimately Timur Bekmambetov’s Naishuller stepped in to direct.

The cast of Road House 2 includes Dave Bautista, Leila George, Andrew Bachelor, Iko Uwais, Hidetoshi Nishijima, Peter Sarsgaard, and Rob Delaney, alongside Jake Gyllenhaal.

Road House is streaming on Prime Video.
