After almost 20 years, the cult classic musical Repo! The Genetic Opera is back in theaters, finding its place among beloved gothic musicals like Rocky Horror Picture Show and Sweeney Todd. This successful return might not be the end, though! Director Darren Lynn Bousman, known for the original Saw films, has announced a 4K release and suggested that a sequel could be in the works.
The film Repo! The Genetic Opera is set in a dark, futuristic world that feels eerily close to today. The story centers around GeneCo, a ruthless company that offers loans but takes your organs as payment if you fall behind. Originally created in 2022 as a stage musical called The Necromerchant’s Debt by Darren Smith and Terrance Zdunich, the project was later developed into a short film and ultimately a full-length feature directed by Bousman.
Featuring a diverse cast including Anthony Head (from Buffy), singer Sarah Brightman, Alexa Vega, and Paris Hilton, Repo! The Genetic Opera was full of unexpected moments and has remained popular for over 17 years. To celebrate the film’s return to cinemas, ScreenRant spoke with director Darren Bousman and Paris Hilton. They discussed their favorite on-set memories, explored why the movie continues to resonate with audiences, and considered the possibility of a sequel.
Are Repo! The Genetic Opera’s Cast & Director Onboard With A Sequel?
For years, fans have been hoping for a continuation of the cult classic Repo!. Now that the original movie is being re-released in 4K, many are wondering if this could lead to a sequel, a stage adaptation, or further exploration of the film’s universe. The movie’s themes – like the dangers of medical debt and unchecked corporate power – feel particularly timely right now, increasing the desire for more content.
Darren Lynn Bousman: Every time I see Paris, I threaten her with a sequel.
Paris Hilton: No threat, I would love it!
Beyond the buzz around the newly restored 4K version of the film, the creators are also working on a new project called Road to Reality, which significantly increases the possibility of a sequel. He hinted that work on this new project could naturally lead into developing Repo! 2, saying, “It might just flow seamlessly into the sequel.”
Absolutely, we’re planning more for Repo! The Genetic Opera. Terrance Zdunich, Darren Smith, and I – the team behind the original stage show and movie – have been meeting frequently to discuss the future. While a 4K release and return to theaters are great, we’re aiming for something bigger – a new project that will build on the original and create a lasting impact. We do have plans in the works.
What’s really exciting is that the story naturally lends itself to a continuation. We initially planned for a trilogy, and revisiting it after twenty years, it’s clear how surprisingly relevant it still is. Despite the outlandish nature of the Largo family and GeneCo, the current state of the world doesn’t require much alteration to make the story resonate. It feels perfectly suited for a new Repo! installment.
Absolutely, we’re very interested in making it happen. If enough people show their support and express their enthusiasm, it will definitely help. I believe we could get most of the original cast and creators on board – everyone has talked about how much they enjoyed working on it, so I think it would be an easy decision for us.
Repo! The Genetic Opera’s Most Iconic Moment Reflected On 17 Years Later
ScreenRant asked Paris about filming the scene where Amber Sweet’s face falls off, and what she admired most about Amber’s performance and overall stage presence.
Being on camera for that was a really wild experience. It took hours to apply all the makeup and prosthetics, and honestly, I didn’t even recognize myself when I looked in the mirror. Freddie Krueger has always been my biggest fear, and wearing that mask felt like becoming him.
I was dressed as Marie Antoinette, performing this over-the-top opera piece, and it was completely wild. The entire set was such a crazy experience, but incredibly fun to be a part of. I had a feeling that scene would be iconic, something people would remember forever, and unlike anything they’d ever witnessed.
Bousman explained what made the scene so effective, also acknowledging the influence of the original stage production.
Darren Lynn Bousman found the situation funny. He believes it stemmed from the actress’s size and the level of attention she expected, but she still managed to pull off a very over-the-top scene.
Even in the play itself, that scene was always the most over-the-top. She really channeled Marie Antoinette, adopting a deliberately exaggerated voice for the song. It took a lot of courage to perform it that way! We had a huge crowd of extras that day, and it was funny because she fully embraced the silliness. I think that’s why Amber Sweet’s performance is so memorable – Paris didn’t shy away from being ridiculous, she went all in.
Hilton expressed gratitude, noting that the documentary Repo! played a role in shifting how the public viewed her.
Darren, a lot of that comfort and openness came from you – you created a really comfortable atmosphere on set where everyone felt safe being themselves. We all became like a family, and that allowed me to really relax and fully commit to my performance.
People generally saw me as just a performer, but there was a lot more to who I am. I’m incredibly thankful you saw potential in me and gave me that role – it truly transformed my life in so many positive ways.
Everything Else Darren Lynn Bousman & Paris Hilton Said About Repo! The Genetic Opera
Over time, Repo! has gained a dedicated fanbase, much like The Rocky Horror Picture Show. When did those involved in the film first notice it was becoming more popular than they initially expected?
I quickly understood how popular the movie was becoming. I remember our first Comic-Con – seeing fans dressed as my character, Amber Sweet, and hearing them talk about midnight screenings was incredible. They said it felt like a modern mix of ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ and ‘Blade Runner’, and it was clear people were really connecting with the story and characters.
From the start, there was something really unique about how people reacted to the movie – screenings felt like full-blown events. It was amazing to see the fans’ enthusiasm! Even now, every Halloween, I see tons of people dressing up as Amber Sweet and sharing their love for the film on TikTok. It’s incredibly cool to witness that continued passion.
Bousman was in lockstep with his star, adding:
For me, the excitement around the premiere of the movie was a two-part experience. We held it in Las Vegas at Planet Hollywood before anyone had really seen the film, but fans flew in from all over the world! Amazingly, people were already dressing up as characters just days after the trailer came out – and this was before movies had long-lasting popularity like they do now. It was incredible.
Paris brought up a really interesting point. The show always had a dedicated, almost fanatical following, but it’s experiencing a resurgence thanks to social media. I’m constantly seeing TikToks of young people—some who weren’t even alive when it was first released—performing dances to songs like “Zydrate Anatomy” or dressing up as characters like Amber Sweet. It’s amazing to see it find a new audience and a new life.
ScreenRant: What stands out most to you when you look back at the production, Darren?
Darren Lynn Bousman believes the enduring appeal of ‘Repo!’ – and its recent return to theaters with a 4K release after 17 years – comes down to its incredibly unique cast. He feels the actors, while talented, were an unlikely group to be in a movie together, and that’s precisely what makes the film so great.
Despite being an unlikely combination of people and elements, the project was surprisingly successful. Everything, from the visuals to the clothing, and especially the diverse cast – including Paul Sorvino, Paris Hilton, and Sarah Breitman – came together perfectly. It drew inspiration from many different worlds and fan communities. While Paul Sorvino was famous for playing tough mafia characters, he was, at heart, a passionate opera fan.
I think the strangeness is what made the movie feel fun and let the audience have fun with it.
When you looked back at the story and old footage while preparing the 4K version, did you remember anything new, or were there any exciting details you’d forgotten?
I was just looking at some old photos from the set – we were so young! It’s crazy to think we both have kids now. I was still early in my career, fresh off the Saw films, and it feels like ages ago. But honestly, when I look back, Repo! is one of the projects I remember most fondly. Making a movie is always a huge challenge – getting it funded, cast, edited the way you envision, and finally released – it’s a real struggle.
As an artist, this movie felt incredibly personal – it was the most authentically ‘me’ project I’ve ever brought to the screen. The producers and financiers didn’t quite understand it, and honestly, I think they were a little hesitant, so they gave us a lot of creative freedom. We weren’t stifled by constant restrictions or demands about what to include, or who to cast.
While reviewing over sixty hours of behind-the-scenes footage for the 4K release, Bousman made a surprising discovery.
It really makes me happy that we managed to get away with so much of what we did. I’m not sure that would be possible now, because people seem much more cautious. These days, you really need to consider who your audience is and whether a movie will be profitable before you even start making it.
You know, working on ‘Repo!’ was just so freeing. We were really encouraged to be creative and just make something artistic. Honestly, that kind of freedom is pretty rare in filmmaking these days. It really is a special thing when it happens.
ScreenRant asked Paris about playing Amber, noting it was a very different role for her at the time. They pointed out that many now see Amber as a groundbreaking character and asked Paris how she views the role now, and whether she thinks audiences’ perspectives have changed over time.
Yeah, things were really different back then. People were so used to my image – blonde hair, a tiny dog, and always dressed in pink.
Amber was a really multifaceted character. Each scene felt different because of the prosthetics, hair, and overall look. Thinking about her now, it’s clear she was a girl who craved her father’s attention, and I think she tried to change herself to fill an emotional void. Her family was also incredibly chaotic, but despite everything, she was a remarkably strong and resilient person.
I really enjoy the feeling of surprising people. I’ll never forget auditioning – I was incredibly nervous walking into the room with Darren and the rest of the team. But I was well-prepared; I knew all my lines and even dressed the part! I just felt so proud and thrilled when they told me I got the role.
Hilton didn’t seem to sell herself well enough during the audition, so the director intervened to offer more enthusiastic support and make her story more compelling.
You know, I have to share something about Paris Hilton’s audition – it’s actually quite amusing. Before that day, I only knew ‘Paris Hilton’ as a celebrity image, a brand. I hadn’t really thought of her as an actress or a person at all. To be honest, my entire impression of her came from things I’d seen on sites like TMZ or Perez Hilton. I really didn’t know what to expect!
We had already met around fifteen well-known and important people at the event. I specifically remember Paris arriving – I actually held my breath when I saw her! There was a buzz throughout the room, with people whispering and getting excited, like, ‘Oh my gosh, it’s Paris!’ Her entrance really changed the atmosphere.
She succeeded because she dedicated significantly more effort and thorough research to the task than anyone else involved.
Her audition was strong, but what really stood out was how clearly she expressed her ideas and how deeply she’d considered the character. She actually brought me a pink scrapbook filled with details for every scene she was in. She even included a mood board of what she envisioned for the character, Amber Sweet. Honestly, she put more thought into that scrapbook than I probably did planning the entire movie! It was incredible – after she left, everyone just sat in silence for a moment, completely stunned. We all agreed she was phenomenal.
She completely captivated everyone. From the moment she entered the room, all doubts vanished. We quickly understood the immense effort she’d put into preparing for a movie audition – one she hadn’t even known she was trying out for. It was then I saw the real Paris, not the public persona, but a truly dedicated actress.
The cult classic film Repo! The Genetic Opera was re-released in theaters on May 29th in a newly remastered 4K version, and a physical copy will be available soon.
