There’s good news for fans of Sam Raimi’s work! The future of the franchise has been announced, and it’s happening at a time when horror movies are particularly popular with audiences.
The latest Evil Dead movie, Evil Dead Wrath, has finished filming and is slated for release in 2028. Fans won’t have to wait too long for a scare, though – Evil Dead Burn is coming to theaters on July 9th. A new teaser announced the completion of filming for Evil Dead Wrath, showing a film slate being submerged in blood – a clear sign that the movie will deliver the gruesome horror fans expect from the series.
More Stories Will Be Told in the Evil Dead Universe
The Evil Dead series began in 1981 with Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell, but it has since expanded to include standalone stories within the same world, directed by various filmmakers. Following Lee Cronin’s 2023 film, Evil Dead Rise, Sébastien Vaniček is set to direct Evil Dead Burn, which will feature a completely new cast. Starring Souheila Yacoub and Tandi Wright, the movie centers around a family reunion that takes a terrifying turn when people begin transforming into Deadites.
Francis Galluppi is directing the seventh installment in the Evil Dead series, currently titled Evil Dead Wrath. While the story is still under wraps, the film will feature a new cast, including Charlotte Hope, Jessica McNamee, and Zach Gilford. It’s slated for a theatrical release on April 7, 2028, aligning with statements made by franchise star Bruce Campbell.
Campbell, a producer for the films, stated in a 2023 interview with A.V. Club that they plan to release new installments every two to three years, a much faster pace than the previous ten-year gap between releases.
Horror Movies Are Dominating the Box Office
Horror movies are currently experiencing a big comeback, and the latest Evil Dead films are part of that trend. Despite having much smaller budgets than most big Hollywood movies, these new horror films are proving to be very profitable. For example, a recent film by a rising director has already made over 100 times its production cost and continues to perform well, currently holding the No. 2 spot at the domestic box office with another $26.4 million earned, bringing its total to over $104 million.
Kane Parsons’ new horror film debuted at number one this weekend, earning over $81.4 million domestically. Surprisingly, both Backrooms and Obsession outperformed the highly anticipated, big-budget film Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu. Backrooms was initially projected to make around $40 million, but it ended up earning more than double that amount.
Evil Dead Burn hits theaters on July 9, 2026, followed by Evil Dead Wrath on Apr. 7, 2028.
