Netflix’s ‘Scooby-Doo’ Series Addressed by Matthew Lillard

Matthew Lillard, best known for playing Shaggy in the popular 2002 Scooby-Doo movie and its sequel, has given his approval to Netflix’s new live-action Scooby-Doo series. Netflix announced plans for the show in spring 2025, and it will be produced by Greg Berlanti, the creator of the Arrowverse.

Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, the writers behind Cowboy Bebop, are working on the script. Frank Welker will once again voice Scooby-Doo, a role he’s played for the last 24 years. The actors who will play Fred, Daphne, Velma, and Shaggy haven’t been announced yet.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Damian Lillard shared his excitement about the new version of the series. He’s especially happy that it will allow a new generation to learn from both the heroes and villains featured in the show.

I’m genuinely thrilled for everyone involved. I really believe the show should be revived – it’s been years since we’ve had an animated series, and that’s a shame. It’s such a fantastic way to introduce kids to the art of storytelling. For many, it’s their first experience with ghost stories, and it teaches valuable lessons about friendship, teamwork, and solving mysteries, often involving a masked villain. These are important things for kids to learn.

I’m glad it’s returning. I’m hoping the creators respect what’s always worked well and build on that foundation. However, I’m a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to this series – at its heart, it’s really about the power of friendship, which is wonderful, and I hope they don’t lose sight of that.

Is There a Synopsis for the New ‘Scooby-Doo’?

Warner Bros.

I was so excited when Netflix first announced their new series, and they even gave us a little preview of what to expect! It’s a really cool idea – instead of starting the show with Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and Scooby already solving mysteries like in the movies with Matthew Lillard, it’s going to show us how they met – back when they were all just kids at summer camp, before they even formed Mystery Inc. I think that’s a fantastic way to tell their origin story!

Shaggy and Daphne reconnect with old friends to investigate a spooky mystery involving a lost Great Dane puppy. This puppy may have seen something terrible happen, and now the group – including the logical Velma and a new, intriguing classmate named Freddy – must uncover the truth. As they investigate, they find themselves caught in a frightening situation that could reveal hidden secrets from their pasts.

The most recent take on Scooby-Doo was the 2020 animated film Scoob!, which connected to a larger universe of Hanna-Barbera characters, including appearances by the Blue Falcon and Dick Dastardly. The movie boasted a star-studded voice cast featuring Jason Isaacs (known for The White Lotus), Zac Efron (The Iron Claw), Mark Wahlberg (The Departed), Amanda Seyfried (Mank), Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin), Christina Hendricks (Mad Men), Henry Winkler (Barry), Will Forte (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs), and Welker. MovieWeb described it as a more action-packed version of the original cartoon.
