Backrooms spoilers follow.
The horror film Backrooms is now showing in theaters, immersing audiences in the eerie and expansive world of liminal spaces after a long wait.
Written by Will Soodik and directed by Kane Parsons, the film expands on a series of short videos the director previously made online. It centers around Clark, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Mary, played by Renate Reinsve, who stumble upon a number of unsettling places.

Of course, they aren’t the only ones lost in these strange places, and they face many frightening encounters along the way. The situation takes an unexpected turn when Clark captures Mary, revealing that the furniture store owner actually prefers being trapped in the Backrooms to living in reality.
Clark appears strangely accepting of a monstrous doppelganger known as “Pirate Clark.” After being scolded by Mary for his harmful actions, he tries to connect with the creature, only to be brutally consumed by it.

In an interview with Polygon, Parsons described how Clark seemed trapped in an “echo chamber,” where the Backrooms were essentially a reflection of his own inner thoughts and feelings. He suggested the Backrooms resonated with a deep, long-held desire or a personal void Clark had been experiencing for a long time.
Okay, so this guy thought he understood everything going on, but it’s becoming super clear he’s been kidding himself. And honestly? When he finally admits that, it totally throws off the whole carefully constructed reality he’s been living in. It’s like his character is starting to unravel, and it’s messing everything up for me as a player.
Parsons declined to discuss the idea that the character Pirate Clark mirrors the actor’s own behavior, hinting that revealing more would spoil future developments. He explained he needs to ‘protect’ that aspect of the show for now.
After Clark’s death, the story continues with Mary being taken captive by scientists from Async when she returns to the normal world. They question her about what she experienced, and a company spokesperson reveals some of the Backrooms’ origins.

It becomes clear that the Backrooms has seemingly used Mary’s experiences as inspiration for creating new areas, and that multiple versions of her now exist. This development strongly suggests potential for future films in the series.
Parsons approached discussing this project with more caution. He explained he generally avoids detailing the meaning behind his work, not because he’s trying to avoid the question, but because his audience tends to accept his explanations rather than forming their own opinions.
Backrooms is in cinemas now.
