This hidden gem of a mystery-sci-fi series really deserves a wider audience. From the creators of the acclaimed show Dark (2017-2020), it centers around a group of immigrants journeying to the United States aboard the ship Kerberos.
Emily Beecham plays Maura, a British doctor who specializes in brains and nerves. Her strange visions pull her into increasingly complex and mysterious situations. While the show initially earned a second season, it hasn’t received the attention it deserves, particularly compared to other popular series on Netflix.
Netflix’s 1899 Is a Beautifully Complex Sci-Fi Series
There’s nothing straightforward about the TV show 1899. It’s the kind of series where having a guide can really help you understand the complex plot. While Maura is the central character, the entire cast is excellent. The show features a diverse group of people with different languages, backgrounds, and motivations, creating a complicated web of relationships. Add in the supernatural aspects, and it becomes challenging to follow what’s happening without some help. Each character’s unique personality and behavior further intensify the mystery.
The series 1899 thrives on bold ambition and inventive storytelling, particularly as it shifts from a historical mystery into a full-blown science fiction adventure. The passengers aboard the Kerberos aren’t simply immigrants seeking a new life in America. The show’s quick pace and skillful blending of genres demonstrate excellent writing.
While 1899 is engaging, it’s not a show you can passively watch. It’s very thought-provoking and doesn’t spoon-feed the audience information. From the discovery of the Prometheus to Maura solving the central mystery, the story unfolds visually, requiring viewers to actively piece things together and think critically.
1899 is a captivating German series that blends drama, mystery, science fiction, romance, and historical elements, offering broad appeal. Packed with rich storytelling and lore, the eight-episode show unfolds at a deliberate pace, ensuring the complex narrative never feels hurried or confusing.
This is particularly noticeable when dealing with unreliable narration, which is a challenging technique in visual storytelling. Even a brief distraction can cause viewers to miss crucial details.
Netflix Has a History of Canceling Its Most Promising Shows
As a big streaming fan, it really frustrates me when shows with potential get canceled, and it’s been happening a lot lately. Even though Netflix has a huge budget and is the most popular service, they surprisingly cut 1899 despite good viewership and positive reactions. It was such a shame, because the story could have gone in so many interesting directions! It reminds me of other frustrating cancellations like David, The OA, and Warrior Nun – shows that deserved a chance to really develop.
As a viewer, I’m consistently baffled by Netflix’s habit of canceling promising shows just as they’re finding their footing – and the cancellation of 1899 feels particularly frustrating. This show managed to pack a huge, complex story into just eight episodes, and it did so brilliantly. What really stood out was how seamlessly it incorporated an international cast and perspective. It’s a genuinely compelling series that absolutely deserved a second season, and I’m really disappointed it won’t get one.
Season 1 of 1899 is streaming on Netflix.
