Only a few months after the popular series featuring Dunk and Egg, HBO is preparing to return viewers to the world of Westeros with season three of House of the Dragon. The final trailer for the new season, which premieres June 21st, suggests the long-awaited war is finally beginning.
The dramatic murder at the end of season 1, and Rhaenyra’s reaction, led viewers to expect a war between the opposing factions in season 2. However, season 2 felt slow and stalled, constantly hinting at an upcoming conflict without actually delivering it. The season 2 finale again teased a war, and now, in season 3, House of the Dragon finally appears to be starting the battle everyone has been waiting for. This could potentially offer a different, and perhaps more satisfying, conclusion to the Targaryen story, echoing themes from Game of Thrones and offering a kind of resolution for Daenerys Targaryen.
The new trailer suggests Rhaenyra’s story in season 3 of House of the Dragon will explore what might have happened if Daenerys Targaryen had remained on the Iron Throne at the end of Game of Thrones. While Daenerys was killed before she could become a ruler feared by her people, Rhaenyra will face that challenge, essentially giving viewers a second look at that potential outcome.
The last season of Game of Thrones disappointed many viewers, but the way Daenerys Targaryen’s character changed was particularly frustrating. She had been a compelling and well-developed character – flawed yet with a strong moral compass – and her sudden turn to violence felt unearned and out of character. Now, House of the Dragon has the opportunity to deliver the nuanced and satisfying story that Daenerys deserved.
Could A Ninth Season Have Saved Game Of Thrones?
The final seasons of Game of Thrones faced several major criticisms, but the core issue was that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss no longer had complete novels by George R.R. Martin to work from. With the next books still unpublished, they were forced to base the show on Martin’s incomplete story ideas.
While George R.R. Martin developed detailed story outlines, Benioff and Weiss rushed through them in the final seasons of Game of Thrones. They didn’t adequately prepare viewers for Daenerys’s sudden shift to villainy, instead having her abruptly turn destructive. With a few more seasons – perhaps even one beyond season 8 – to develop the plot more fully, could the show have avoided its disappointing ending, or was the damage already done?
I don’t think another season could have fixed the show’s issues, which really started in season six. Still, it would have been interesting to see what happened with Daenerys after she won the throne. Instead, the writers killed her off quickly just for shock value. If they’d known about a ninth season while working on the eighth, they might have let Daenerys live and actually shown us how she would have ruled.
Rhaenyra’s story arc in the third season of House of the Dragon feels like a way to make up for how Daenerys’s character was treated in the previous seasons. This makes the new season much more promising, especially after the disappointing second season. It’s also great to see Daemon playing a more active role in the story this time around!
