Apple TV is fast becoming my go-to place for science fiction shows, and they have a lot more exciting content planned. While it doesn’t have as many titles as some other streaming services, or a never-ending stream of new releases, Apple TV’s focus on sci-fi is a refreshing change of pace.
Apple TV is becoming a major force in high-quality science fiction, with critically acclaimed shows like Pluribus, Severance, and Foundation, and exciting new adaptations on the way, including Neuromancer.
No discussion of Apple TV’s sci-fi shows would be complete without mentioning For All Mankind, their most enduring series. Launched in 2019, it’s now expanding into a spin-off, Star City, which will premiere on the same day as the fifth season’s finale. This new show marks the beginning of a potential franchise, broadening the scope of the story beyond the US and NASA to include the Soviet Union, their main competitors.
What To Expect From For All Mankind’s Spinoff, Star City
The show Star City revisits the very start of an alternate history, exploring what happened immediately after the Soviet Union won the space race by landing a man on the moon first. This initial premise – the core idea behind For All Mankind – has shaped the entire story over the past five seasons.
Although NASA’s initial setback in the Moon race actually spurred the US to innovate and ultimately helped establish lunar and Martian colonies, the Soviet Union’s early success seemed to justify its political system and demonstrate the effectiveness of its unique approach.
While For All Mankind has occasionally shown us glimpses of life in the Soviet Union, the new series Star City will delve much deeper into this world. It will also introduce us to important new characters, including Sergei Nikulov and Irina Morozova.
The show will also introduce a lot of new characters, like the brilliant engineers and designers at Star City – Russia’s space program – and the courageous cosmonauts who risk everything in space to represent their country.
For All Mankind Season 6 Is Still Happening On Apple TV
The new series, Star City, will launch with its first episode on the same day the fifth season of For All Mankind concludes. After that, new episodes will be released each week. Some shows use this approach – releasing a spin-off immediately after a series finale, like Vought Rising following The Boys – to continue the story. However, Star City isn’t a continuation of its original show’s ending; it exists alongside it.
As a huge fan, I was a little sad to hear that For All Mankind is ending with season 6, which is expected in 2027. Luckily, the Star City series will tide us over for a bit after season 5 wraps up. But knowing this next season is the last? It’s definitely going to make the wait even more agonizing – and the anticipation will be huge!
Despite everything, Star City offers a fresh and interesting take on this beloved series and hints at exciting new developments. If you haven’t started watching either show yet, now’s the perfect chance to jump in and follow both storylines at the same time. You won’t want to miss what’s sure to be one of the most captivating and imaginative sci-fi shows on Apple TV.
