Netflix’s The Crash becomes number 1 in global streaming chart with over 27 million views this week

I just finished watching The Crash on Netflix, and wow, it’s intense! It’s a true crime doc and it’s seriously gripping – it’s actually number one on Netflix worldwide right now. I heard it racked up over 27 million views this week, which is crazy! Definitely recommend checking it out if you’re into that kind of stuff.

I just finished watching this crazy documentary about Mackenzie Shirilla. Basically, she deliberately drove her car into a wall in Strongsville, Ohio back in July 2022, and sadly, two people – Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan – died because of it. It’s a really tough story.

At first, everyone thought it was just a terrible accident, but then investigators started looking closer and began to suspect that Shirilla actually caused the crash on purpose. It was shocking when she was charged with murder, and even more so when she received two life sentences that will run at the same time. It’s just a really sad and disturbing case, honestly.

Okay, so this documentary that just came out earlier this month is blowing up! It’s actually the number one film in 27 countries right now – even beating out popular titles like Swapped and Ladies First. Seriously, people are watching a ton of it – we’re talking 43.7 million hours viewed with 27.6 million total watches this week alone (according to Tudum).

Gareth Johnson directed the true crime film, and Angharad Scott produced it. They interviewed Shirilla and, in an interview with Tudum, explained their goal was to share the stories of those impacted by the case.

Scott explained that while similar stories existed, many of the people involved hadn’t had a chance to share their perspectives and felt it was important to do so.

We aimed to show all sides of the story as honestly and precisely as possible in this film,” Johnson explained. “We’ve provided viewers with all the information they need to form their own opinions about the events.

Critics have given The Crash high marks, with 92% of reviews on Rotten Tomatoes being positive, based on 12 reviews. Ready Steady Cut gave the film four stars and described it as a powerful call to action.

RadioTimes gave the story three stars, calling it a captivating account of manipulation and the investigation of car accidents. However, they noted that as a documentary, it follows a predictable pattern and doesn’t offer the sharp insights found in top-tier documentaries.

According to the Bangkok Post, The Crash is a deeply upsetting and moving film—a careful look at a damaging relationship with tragic consequences. Culture Mix highlighted the film’s use of many different interviews, calling it a strength.

The Crash is streaming on Netflix.
