Okay, so in the last episode of Dutton Ranch, things got really tense! Beth and Rip found out their cattle were sick with foot-and-mouth disease. Apparently, this has never happened on the show before, which is crazy! It’s a huge problem and sets up a lot of drama in Episode 4. I’m really worried about what this means for the ranch!
Okay, so the show really hammered home just how devastating foot-and-mouth disease is – one sick animal can take down everything. And honestly, watching Beth and Rip’s Texas dream crumble felt like a punch to the gut, mirroring the loss they experienced back in Montana. The speed with which the disease ripped through their new herd was horrifying, and with no way to save the cattle, they were forced to make an incredibly difficult, heartbreaking decision to protect what little remained of their ranch. It was brutal, but sadly, completely believable given what we learned in the show’s backstory.
Rip Wheeler Steps Up in Dutton Ranch’s Hard-to-Watch Scene
Truly embracing the cowboy lifestyle requires making tough choices. His time on the Yellowstone ranch had prepared him for fights and even violence, but nothing could have fully prepared him for the events in “Start With a Bullet.” Rip and Beth come to the difficult conclusion that the only solution is to euthanize the entire herd of cattle, even those that seem healthy.
The task was incredibly painful and difficult – something even Rip, the tough ranch foreman from Yellowstone, couldn’t ask his cowboys to do. Despite having Beth, Azul, and Zachariah with him, he took on the heartbreaking responsibility of shooting the cattle himself, one by one. The entire scene was agonizing, both leading up to, during, and after the act. It wasn’t just the sight of the cattle being led to their deaths; seeing the empty bullet casings fall with each shot Rip fired was truly devastating.
The deaths don’t happen on screen, but the scene is lengthy and makes it clear what’s occurring. Director Hilary Bettis focuses on the characters’ faces, showing their intense trauma as the gunshots sound around them, and follows the entire event from start to finish.
Honestly, the most devastating moment for me was watching Rip have to put down the little calf who made it through the Montana wildfire. Beth desperately wanted to give it a chance, hoping it could recover, but they both knew it was too late. Seeing that calf, the last one left among all the others in the ditch, and Rip looking into its eyes with such sadness… it was probably the most heartbreaking thing I’ve seen on TV all year. It just completely broke my heart.
Dutton Ranch Beats Yellowstone as Its Darkest Show
The show Yellowstone doesn’t shy away from depicting animal deaths. Right from the start, the first scene shows John Dutton humanely euthanizing his injured horse. Throughout the first season, other animals met tragic ends – a coyote was hit by a truck, and a dog suffered severe injuries in an explosion. While Season 1 had a lot of these upsetting scenes, they continued to appear later on.
PETA claimed that the show Yellowstone used real cow corpses in its second season, but Paramount Network refuted these claims. Beyond this accusation, many viewers criticized the show’s violent scenes, saying that Yellowstone frequently showed animal death and suffering, sometimes to an excessive degree.
It’s hard to predict how viewers will respond to such a powerful moment at Dutton Ranch. While the scene doesn’t show the cattle being killed directly, the surrounding circumstances make it incredibly difficult to watch. It’s likely a scene many will choose to skip on rewatches, but it’s also skillfully crafted and avoids being unnecessarily graphic or exploitative.
