The popular fantasy horror film The Prophecy, featuring Christopher Walken, is coming to a major streaming service tomorrow. Fans of horror and dark fantasy will soon have a new way to enjoy this classic movie.
Starting February 1st, you’ll be able to watch The Prophecy on the streaming service. They’ll also have a variety of popular movies like Grease, its sequel, American Beauty, and Almost Famous.
Gregory Widen made his directorial debut with the 1995 film The Prophecy. The movie stars Elias Koteas as Thomas Dagget, a hardened Los Angeles detective who once studied to be a priest but lost his faith after seeing disturbing visions of a war in heaven. When the angel Simon, played by Eric Stoltz, arrives at Dagget’s home with a warning about a coming disaster, the detective begins a frightening journey to discover the truth and potentially save both Heaven and Earth.
In addition to Robert Dagget and Eric Stoltz, The Prophecy features Virginia Madsen as Katherine, a local teacher, Steve Hytner as the coroner, and Jeff Cadiente as the evil angel Uziel. Viggo Mortensen plays Lucifer, and Christopher Walken portrays the film’s main villain, the archangel Gabriel. The cast also includes Amanda Plummer, Moriah ‘Shining Dove’ Snyder, Adam Goldberg, Albert Nelson, Patrick McAllister, and J.C. Quinn.
Despite finishing filming in 1993, The Prophecy wasn’t released in theaters until September 1995. Critics gave it mixed reviews, and it currently has a 46% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 24 reviews.
Despite generally positive audience reactions – currently reflected in a 64% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on over 25,000 reviews – the film didn’t perform well financially when it was first released. It earned just over $16 million at the box office during its initial run.
The Legacy of The Prophecy Franchise — Explained
Although the original The Prophecy wasn’t a huge hit, the series continued with four sequels released directly to video over the next ten years. The first, The Prophecy II, was directed by Greg Spence and co-written by Matt Greenberg. It brought back Christopher Walken as the angel Gabriel, who had been banished from Hell by Lucifer, starting another dark and fantastical story.
Christopher Walken reprised his role as Gabriel in The Prophecy 3: The Ascent. Directed by Patrick Lussier and written by Joel Soisson and Carle Dupré, the film featured Walken in a supporting role as the primary threat shifted to Pyriel, played by Scott Cleverdon, who was presented as the Angel of Genocide.
The last two films in the Prophecy series, Uprising and Forsaken, were both written and directed by Joel Soisson and filmed back-to-back in 2005. Unlike the previous films, these installments don’t feature Christopher Walken as Gabriel or Eric Hytner as Joseph. Instead, the story centers on Allison, played by Kari Wuhrer, a theology student who discovers an ancient book that predicts the future – and seems to write itself. This discovery sets the stage for a new conflict between Heaven and Hell.
Both The Prophecy: Uprising and The Prophecy: Forsaken were poorly received by both critics and viewers, even though horror icons Doug Bradley and Tony Todd made appearances in them. As of today, these films have low scores on Rotten Tomatoes – 31% for Uprising and 22% for Forsaken – based on over 1,000 reviews each.
The Prophecy will be available for streaming on Paramount+ on Feb. 1.
