For All Mankind Season 5 Finale Teases Saturn-Focused Season 6

Season five of For All Mankind hinted at major discoveries about the universe, life, and what we thought was impossible. The season finale lives up to those hints, dramatically altering everything viewers thought they knew as the show heads into its final season.

As For All Mankind heads into its Season 5 finale, the characters are facing a pivotal moment. Marines have landed on Mars, where the established inhabitants, known as “Marsies,” are fighting for their independence from Earth. With communication to Mars cut off, the mission on Titan—where an astronaut is stranded and a major discovery has been made—becomes incredibly important, as this discovery hasn’t been shared with either Mars or Earth yet.

Kelly and Her Crew Find Life on Titan

As the Marsies and M-6 marines continue their conflict in Happy Valley, oblivious to a recent ceasefire, the crew of the Sojourner-Titan are experiencing a bit of luck—though it won’t last. Kelly, Walt, and Elena unexpectedly discover life on Titan: bacteria. This groundbreaking discovery marks the first evidence of life beyond Earth, and is arguably the most significant finding in the world of For All Mankind.

The crew’s joy quickly turns to worry when they realize they’re stranded on Titan. Their rover’s battery has died, and they only have enough oxygen for two of them to make it back to the spacecraft. Inspired by her father’s courage, Kelly bravely volunteers to stay behind so Elena and Walt can return home safely.

All signs suggest Kelly is gone. Both Elena and Walt recognize the seriousness of her choice, which she made because she feels responsible for the crew being stranded on the moon. Her heartfelt farewell to Alex feels like a proper goodbye, even though her death isn’t shown. The final image of Kelly – walking into a glowing lake on Titan – strongly implies the existence of life on that moon.

Will Kelly be back for Season 6? On For All Mankind, anything could happen, and generally, if we don’t actually see a character die, there’s still hope. With the discovery of life on Titan, scientists will be motivated to explore further into the solar system, and they might attempt to rescue Kelly during their travels – assuming she still has air.

For All Mankind Teases a Saturn-Focused Season 6

The show ends with a hint of what’s next to come. Usually, a song from the following decade plays during the credits, subtly moving the audience forward in time. In this case, as “This Land Is Our Land” finishes, The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” begins, playing over a shot of empty space in 2020… until Saturn appears. The camera zooms in on the planet, following its rings, and finally reveals what’s heading our way.

The Soviet spacecraft Mars-94 is currently far from Saturn, but it’s on a path that leads directly to the planet. It played a significant role in Season 3 of the show For All Mankind, depicted as one of the three competing ships in the race to Mars. Unfortunately, the engines failed when the cosmonauts tried to speed ahead of their rivals, forcing them to abandon the mission.

The Mars-94 probe was last seen drifting in space, and remarkably, it recently reappeared near Saturn after 24 years. This discovery raises questions for future space missions, as reaching Saturn would take far too long for humans unless the next season of the show takes place over a period of 20 to 30 years.

However, venturing further into space allows For All Mankind to recapture what made it special: the excitement of accomplishing something previously considered impossible. By refocusing on this core idea and moving away from the Mars independence storyline, the series comes full circle, potentially ending on a powerful and satisfying note.

For All Mankind is available to stream on Apple TV. A sixth and final season is in development.
