As a huge Batman fan, I’ve always known his enemies tend to reappear – it’s practically a running joke! He just won’t kill, which means they always come back for more. But recently, one of his most terrifying villains actually stayed down, and it wasn’t even Batman who finished the job. It’s a total shocker!
Okay, so I just read Batman #163, which is part of the Batman: H2SH storyline, and wow – Talia Al Ghul actually killed Hush! I did not see that coming.
A surprising twist happens during a fight between Batman, Red Hood, and Hush. The battle ends when Talia al Ghul – Ra’s al Ghul’s daughter and the mother of Bruce Wayne’s son, Damian (who is now Robin) – shoots the masked villain in the head.
Right before Hush is fatally shot, he manages to stab his opponent in the heart. This compels Talia to take him to the Lazarus Pit, a place that can bring him back to life, continuing a long history of resurrections.
Honestly, I was totally shocked when this chapter ended! And even more surprised to find out it’s just the halfway point of Batman: H2SH. It really makes you wonder if Hush’s scheme to control Gotham was really over when he went down. Even if it was, the mess he’s made is going to take a long time to fix – it’s not something that’s going to be resolved quickly, that’s for sure.
Hush Turned The Bat-Family Against Batman
The story in Batman #163 begins with Bruce Wayne realizing his allies – Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Huntress, and Red Hood – have lost faith in him. This breakdown in trust started with a specific event, which Hush exploited to convince them that Bruce had become corrupt, leading to a surprising and intense pursuit.
To the hero’s astonishment, the Joker arrives to help, bringing with him a dangerous team: Bane, Killer Croc, Poison Ivy, Scarecrow, Mr. Freeze, Clayface, and the Penguin. Poison Ivy, also known as Pamela Isley, explains that each of these villains has a personal grudge against Hush, and are therefore the only ones willing to fight him alongside our hero.
Batman has come to the difficult realization that he can’t depend on the heroes he previously trained. He’s now forced to work with a team comprised of the very criminals he and his allies have incarcerated in places like Arkham Asylum and Blackgate. With Hush’s death likely appeasing those he wronged, Gotham’s main crime-fighting force seems to be reduced to just Batman and Talia al Ghul for the time being.
Batman: H2SH is the highly anticipated sequel to Jeph Loeb’s popular 2003 story, Batman: Hush. It revisits the conflict between Batman and his childhood friend, Thomas Elliott, who has become a dangerous enemy known as Hush, and ignited a battle with Batman’s most notorious foes.
Jim Lee, who currently leads DC Comics as president, publisher, and chief creative officer, originally did the artwork for this story, with Scott Williams inking it. Both artists are back to help Jeph Loeb finish Batman: H2SH, and the second part should be available soon, though an exact release date hasn’t been announced yet.
Batman #163 is now available to find in comic book stores and on most digital reading platforms.
