I just wanted to give everyone a heads-up: Eric Bana’s amazing anthology series – seriously, it’s so good but doesn’t get nearly enough credit – is leaving Netflix in a few days. If you haven’t checked it out, now’s the time!
The true crime series Dirty John, which aired in 2018, will be removed from Netflix in just a few days, and it’s currently not available on any other streaming services with a standard subscription. It’s leaving on May 31st, so there’s only a short time left to watch it – especially Eric Bana’s excellent, but often overlooked, performance. Luckily, it’s a great show to watch over the weekend.
What Is Dirty John — And Why Is It a Must-See for True Crime Fans?
Based on the popular podcast of the same name and created for television by Alexandra Cunningham, Dirty John offered a fresh take on the true-crime genre. The first season centers around Debra Newell, played by Connie Britton, a recently divorced woman who begins a relationship with John Meehan (Eric Bana), a man hiding a dangerous past. Juno Temple and Julia Garner star as Debra’s daughters, Veronica and Terra, who become increasingly concerned about their mother’s new partner.
When Dirty John first came out, critics were generally positive – Rotten Tomatoes gave Season 1 a ‘Fresh’ rating of 67%. While viewers weren’t quite as enthusiastic, the show definitely made a splash! It got enough attention that they went ahead and made a second season, and even a companion documentary series called Dirty John: The Dirty Truth. As a true crime fan, I was hooked from the start and thrilled to see the story expanded upon!
Season 2 told a new story, focusing on the collapse of Betty Broderick’s marriage to her husband, Dan, and the intense emotional pain Betty experienced. Amanda Peet and Christian Slater played Betty and Dan Broderick.
What’s Next for Dirty John Star Eric Bana on Netflix?
Eric Bana’s fans are eagerly awaiting the next season of Untamed. Unlike the first season, which took place in Yosemite National Park, Season 2 will move the action to the beautiful islands of Hawai’i, where ISB Special Agent Turner will investigate a new and unique murder.
In March, Mark L. Smith, co-creator and showrunner of Untamed, explained how the show expanded from a planned six-episode limited series into the ongoing, international adventure it’s becoming. He said that he and co-creator Elle Smith originally intended it to be a self-contained story. However, as they worked on it, and with such a talented cast, they started thinking about how they could continue the series.
Actress Kimiko Glenn joins Lana Parrilla’s Special Agent Turner in the upcoming series. According to Netflix Tudum, Glenn will play Awapuhi, a Hawaiian native who recently lost her son. She returns to the Big Island to confront her past and the pain she’s been avoiding.
Whigham will portray Ray Burkart, a grieving father whose son’s murder investigation puts him at odds with Turner. Burkart relocated to the Big Island of Hawaii from California three decades ago and is involved in a number of businesses, some of which operate in legally gray areas.
Dirty John is available for streaming on Netflix up through May 31.
