New Sherlock Holmes series centred on ‘most famous villain in all of detective fiction’ in the works

Good news for Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts! A new TV series is being developed that centers on James Moriarty, Sherlock’s notorious enemy. The show will explore Moriarty’s life as he battles a competing criminal, all while trying to maintain his secret identity. It’s based on the character created by author Arthur Conan Doyle.

A new series, currently known as Moriarty, is being developed as a fresh take on the crime drama genre. It will center around the iconic villain from Sherlock Holmes stories, according to Deadline.

This crime drama shifts the setting to Northern England and centers on Moriarty, a criminal psychology professor at Durham University. He secretly lives a double life as a brilliant criminal leader.

When a new enemy challenges his criminal network, Moriarty cleverly disguises himself by becoming a consultant for the police. He works tirelessly to expose his rival while concealing his own identity. Partnered with the reserved detective Imogen Burrows, Moriarty quickly discovers the true danger isn’t who he initially thought.

It’s still unknown who will play the famous villain. Andrew Scott previously played Moriarty in the BBC’s Sherlock series, which starred Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes.

Over the past four decades, several actors have portrayed Moriarty, including Ralph Fiennes, Jared Harris, Dougray Scott, Eric Porter, and Dónal Finn, in various films and television shows.

Written by Chris Cornwell and Oliver Lansley, Moriarty is a new series from Fremantle and Archery Pictures, the team behind Operation Mincemeat and Is This Thing On?. It doesn’t currently have a home on a television network.

Kris Thykier, the founder of Archery, expressed excitement about partnering with Fremantle to develop a new series based on the Sherlock Holmes universe, created by Chris Cornwell. Called Moriarty, the show will explore the mind of a criminal mastermind, blending suspenseful action with a darkly humorous look at the psychology of evil.

I was really excited when Fremantle’s Rebecca Dundon said they’d been wanting to team up with Archery Pictures for a while, and when Kris pitched them this idea, they immediately saw how it could become a big, ongoing series. It’s cool they think this story finally brings a lesser-known Sherlock character to life in a way that people will really connect with.
