Sherlock Holmes Universe Expands With New Series on Iconic Villain

Following the success of a new show featuring a young Sherlock Holmes, audiences have become even more interested in his famous enemy, Moriarty. Now, Moriarty is getting his own series.

The Prime Video series Young Sherlock explored the connection between Sherlock Holmes and his future enemy, Moriarty. Now, according to Deadline, Moriarty will be the focus of a new spinoff series – a reimagining set in the present day.

Since the BBC’s Sherlock is the most recent modern take on the classic stories, many fans will likely expect Andrew Scott – well-known for his portrayal of Moriarty – to be involved. However, no actors have been officially cast yet.

What Is Moriarty About?

The new series will be produced by Fremantle and Archery Pictures, the company behind Operation Mincemeat. Writers Chris Cornwell (A Discovery of Witches) and Oliver Lansley (Where’s Wanda?) are also involved.

Moriarty is a fresh take on crime dramas, inspired by the most well-known villain in detective stories.

He appears to be a respected Criminal Psychology professor at Durham University, but secretly, he’s the brilliant mind behind a string of complex crimes across Northern England. When another criminal threatens his operation, Moriarty is forced to make an unusual move: he joins the police as a consultant. He plans to use the legal system to destroy his enemy, all while keeping his true identity a secret from his colleagues.

Sherlock is teamed up with Imogen Burrows, a quiet and determined detective from Yorkshire, creating a powerful duo. However, Moriarty will discover that the biggest danger isn’t the criminal group he’s taking down. It’s currently unknown whether Sherlock himself will make an appearance in the series.
