Summary
- New York Attorney General Letitia James and New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport have subpoenaed FIFA as part of a joint investigation into the 2026 World Cup ticketing process
- The probe focuses on allegations of fake scarcity and variable pricing that caused ticket costs to soar while bumping early buyers into less desirable seats than originally advertised
- Authorities are specifically demanding details regarding ticketing for the eight matches scheduled at MetLife Stadium
New York and New Jersey Attorneys General are investigating FIFA, soccer’s governing body, over concerns about how tickets will be sold for the 2026 World Cup. They’ve issued a legal request for information about pricing and seating for eight games at MetLife Stadium, including the championship match on July 19, 2026. The investigation centers on whether FIFA is using unfair or misleading practices, and it comes as the World Cup prepares to be hosted in North America, raising questions about balancing large international events with the rights of local fans.
The investigation is focused on allegations that FIFA deliberately created the appearance of high demand for tickets by changing seating arrangements and limiting the number of tickets available. Initially, fans purchased tickets based on a four-tiered seating plan. However, after millions of tickets were sold, organizers allegedly changed the stadium layout, adding expensive, premium seating sections within those original areas. This change meant that early buyers were moved to less desirable seats – either behind the goals or further away from the field. According to Davenport, this process was incredibly confusing and resulted in inflated prices, negatively impacting local fans.
Okay, so the lawyers general are really focused on how the tournament tickets were priced. Basically, the organizers used this system where prices changed all the time depending on how many people wanted them – you know, like when tickets first drop. The data shows that for over 90 out of 104 matches between October 2025 and April 2026, the prices went way up. The good seats jumped an average of 34%! They did have a lottery for New York residents where you could get tickets for $50, but it was super competitive – all 50,000 tickets were gone in just three minutes. It was a mad scramble, honestly.
As excitement builds for the upcoming tournament – set to be the largest ever – criticism is growing over the high cost of tickets and related expenses. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has stated that interest in this North American World Cup is equivalent to a thousand years’ worth of previous tournaments. The event will also feature a historic first: a halftime show at MetLife Stadium with Madonna, Shakira, and BTS. Meanwhile, fans who experienced problems with the ticket purchasing process and feel they were misled are being encouraged to file official complaints with consumer protection agencies in New York City and New Jersey as legal challenges mount.
