Marvel Studios has announced the X-Men team for a new movie coming in 2026. This year will be exciting for X-Men fans, as characters previously seen in Fox’s X-Men films will appear in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie. This will officially introduce the X-Men to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the exception of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and a few other mutants who already appeared in Deadpool & Wolverine.
While the movie Avengers: Doomsday isn’t out until December 18th and won’t introduce a new X-Men team for a while, fans of the mutant superheroes have something to look forward to much sooner. X-Men ’97 is returning for a second season on July 1st, and we now know which characters will be featured in the animated series.
As a huge fan of the original X-Men: The Animated Series, I was thrilled with how many familiar faces X-Men ’97 season one brought back. But there were still so many characters from that era they didn’t get to yet! Now that they’re introducing Apocalypse – seriously, one of the X-Men’s biggest enemies ever – it’s clear they’re going to need all the help they can get. Marvel has finally revealed which characters will be joining the fight alongside the X-Men to save mutantkind – and the whole world, it seems – in X-Men ’97.
Marvel Has Revealed X-Men ’97 Season 2’s Roster Of Mutant Heroes
The initial trailer for X-Men ’97 season 2 offered fans a preview of the new episodes and showcased many of the X-Men who will be featured. Most of the original cast from season 1 will be back, but a few new characters will also join the battle against Apocalypse.
The first season of X-Men ’97 concluded with the team spread across different time periods, and season 2 picks up with them still separated. Rogue, Nightcrawler, Magneto, Professor X, and Beast have been sent back to ancient Egypt, around 3,000 BCE. Cyclops and Jean Grey, on the other hand, ended up nearly 7,000 years in the future, in 3,960 CE, where they met Nate Grey and Mother Askani.
The trailer for X-Men ’97 season 2 showed several other X-Men characters, placing them either in 1997 or at unspecified points in time. These heroes include Morph, Storm, Bishop, Polaris, Wolverine, Sunspot, Jubilee, Forge, Emma Frost, Cable, Colossus, Psylocke, and Angel. While Gambit wasn’t in the trailer, he’s likely to appear in season 2, as Apocalypse discovered one of his cards at the end of the first season.
Characters Confirmed To Appear In X-Men ’97 Season 2
---
Professor X
Magneto
Cyclops
Jean Grey
Nathan Grey
Rogue
Nightcrawler
Beast
Mother Aksani
Morph
Storm
Bishop
Polaris
Wolverine
Sunspot
Jubilee
Forge
Emma Frost
Cable
Colossus
Psylocke
Angel
Apocalypse
The appearance of Bishop and Cable suggests that time travel will be a major theme in the second season of X-Men ’97. Although the X-Men begin the season scattered across different eras, it seems they’ll eventually reunite and fight together. The trailer featured a shot of almost the entire team preparing for battle, likely against Apocalypse and his followers.
Marvel Still Has Yet To Reveal Avengers: Doomsday’s X-Men Lineup In Full
Though the animated series X-Men ’97 will introduce the mutants’ story in 2026, they’re also heading to live-action in Avengers: Doomsday. However, we don’t yet know which X-Men will be in Doomsday. Marvel and Disney have only revealed a few mutants who’ll appear, and considering how secretive the MCU usually is, it’s likely even more X-Men will be part of the film.
The upcoming film will feature Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), Magneto (Ian McKellen), Cyclops (James Marsden), Beast (Kelsey Grammer), Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming), Mystique (Rebecca Romijn), and Gambit (Channing Tatum). We’ve seen some of these characters in the trailer for X-Men: Avengers: Doomsday, and the involvement of others has been officially announced, though we haven’t seen them on screen yet.
Even if the X-Men we’ve seen confirmed are the only mutants appearing in Avengers: Doomsday, X-Men fans still have a lot to look forward to. Season 2 of X-Men ’97 is going all-out, assembling the biggest team of X-Men we’ve seen in years, and even including some lesser-known characters. Though it’s an animated series and not connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, X-Men ’97 season 2 is fantastic news for fans of the team.
