Deadpool’s Debut In X-Men ’97 Season 2 Is Kind Of A Big Deal

The summer of 2024 saw huge success for Deadpool & Wolverine, demonstrating that audiences still love the irreverent hero. While Marvel’s popularity isn’t what it once was, people are clearly still excited to see this wisecracking, fourth-wall-breaking character. However, it’s been nearly two years since Ryan Reynolds last played Deadpool, and there are currently no definite plans for Deadpool 4 or confirmation of his return in Avengers: Doomsday.

Deadpool is almost certainly returning to the screen, whether in his own movie, as part of an X-Force team, or even just making a cameo with the X-Men in a future film. And now, Marvel Studios has officially (though indirectly) confirmed that he’ll be appearing in a project soon.

Marvel has released a trailer for season 2 of X-Men ’97, the continuation of the beloved X-Men: The Animated Series which returned in 2024. The first season was praised as one of Disney+’s best Marvel shows, successfully recreating the exciting mix of drama and action from the original series. Season 2 promises to be even more epic, with the conflict against Apocalypse spanning from his beginnings to a future destroyed by him. Despite the grand scale, the show remains true to its 1990s setting, aiming to deliver the same nostalgic feel that fans loved about season 1.

The creators of X-Men ’97 had a lot of freedom to tell stories and develop characters however they wanted, even creating their own separate universe from the broader Marvel multiverse. However, one character, Deadpool, wasn’t available for use in the first season. Now, it looks like they’re able to include him.

Deadpool’s Appearance In X-Men ‘97 Season 2 Is A Huge Deal (Even If It’s Just Morph)

The first season of X-Men ’97 was fantastic, and the trailer for season two is just as promising! It’s got me incredibly excited for the show’s return. The trailer is packed with awesome moments, like Nightcrawler battling ninjas, Cyclops exploring a destroyed world, and Wolverine sporting his classic yellow and brown costume.

The trailer’s biggest surprise is likely the appearance of Deadpool. Although it’s actually the character Morph disguised as Deadpool, it’s still significant. Deadpool wasn’t in the first season of X-Men ’97, and his only previous appearance in the original series was also Morph imitating him to prank Wolverine. It’s interesting that Deadpool appears in X-Men: The Animated Series twice now, and both times it isn’t actually him.

This probably isn’t a sign of big changes to come. I don’t believe Morph transforming into Deadpool means Deadpool will become a central character, or that Morph will frequently use this form. It likely just a cool, temporary transformation for an exciting action scene. However, it does suggest that X-Men ’97 now has the option to include Deadpool in the future, which is encouraging.

With a third season of X-Men ’97 already planned, even before season 2 is released, there’s a chance Deadpool could officially join the team as a regular character. While Morph’s impersonations of Deadpool have been entertaining, fans would likely enjoy seeing the actual Deadpool appear in the show.
