The science-fiction mystery series The Peripheral, originally released a few years ago, is surprisingly popular in the UK right now. Despite not being added to any new streaming platforms, it’s currently the ninth most-watched show on Prime Video, where it’s been available since its initial release, and briefly reached seventh place this week.
This eight-episode show centers on a talented gamer chosen to try out a cutting-edge virtual reality headset.
Surprisingly, the advanced world seen through the ‘peripheral’ isn’t a virtual game, but something real.

Chloë Grace Moretz, known for her roles in Kick-Ass and Oh. What. Fun., stars as Flynne in the new series. The cast also features T’Nia Miller (Years and Years), Katie Leung (Arcane), Gary Carr (Death in Paradise), and Jack Reynor (Midsommar).
The show was originally renewed for another season, but Amazon later cancelled it. They explained that the 2023 writers and actors strikes were the reason for the change of plans.

On Rotten Tomatoes, The Peripheral has a solid score of 79% positive from 57 critic reviews.
According to The Wrap, if you enjoy cyberpunk crime dramas like Ghost in the Shell or Psycho-Pass, or if you’re a fan of shows like Westworld, you’ll likely love The Peripheral.
Many reviewers have drawn comparisons between the show and Westworld. Common Sense Media noted that the series appears to have benefited from lessons learned from Westworld‘s challenges, and The Hollywood Reporter found it a more engaging and less demanding watch.

YouTube reviewer Austin Burke praised The Peripheral as entertaining, engaging, and interesting. Similarly, The Hindu described it as a smartly-written and visually stunning show that respects its audience and leaves them eager for the next episode.
The series was also popular with viewers, receiving a positive rating from over 1,000 users – 85% of them enjoyed it.
