Travis Willingham reveals how The Mighty Nein learned from season 1 in a new production update.
Inspired by the popular Critical Role Dungeons & Dragons campaign, the Prime Video animated series follows a unique group of characters in the world of Exandria. They face a dangerous threat: someone is misusing the power of The Beacon. The first season of The Mighty Nein received rave reviews, earning a perfect 100% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and an 89% audience score.
During a recent interview with ScreenRant’s Grant Hermanns about the upcoming fourth season of The Legend of Vox Machina, Liam Willingham discussed progress on season two of The Mighty Nein. He said it’s going smoothly, noting that it will be distinct from The Legend of Vox Machina and will incorporate lessons learned from the first season of The Mighty Nein. He also hinted at what fans can expect in future episodes. See his full comments below.
As Sam said, we’re fully immersed in the new season, juggling many different aspects of production. It’s progressing really well! We’re constantly switching gears and applying what we learned from the first season of the Mighty Nein. The longer episode format and different style took some getting used to, but we’ve really found our stride now. This season will take us to brand new areas of Exandria. The characters are more established and comfortable with each other, and we’ll be exploring the aftermath of Yasha joining the group. There’s plenty of conflict to resolve as the season begins, and we’re thrilled with the direction the story is taking. These characters mean a lot to us, and we think audiences will be very excited to see what happens next.
These comments from Willingham follow an earlier update to ScreenRant, stating that they had finished filming the first couple of episodes of season 2. Production on the new season is progressing while the Critical Role team also works on their current fourth campaign, The Mighty Nein, The Legend of Vox Machina, and other projects. Prime Video has already renewed The Legend of Vox Machina for a fifth and final season.
Regarding the story in season 2, Willingham points out that Yasha is finally reuniting with The Mighty Nein after being apart for most of season 1. This change from the original campaign was a big one, but it looks like we’ll see why it was made in the upcoming episodes, which will likely be around 45 minutes long. Seeing more of Yasha, the group becoming more comfortable with each other, and exploring other areas of Exandria all sound promising.
For The Mighty Nein animated series, Willingham reprises his role as Fjord Stone, just like many of the original voice actors from the first campaign. The cast also includes Sam Riegel as Nott the Brave, Ashley Johnson as Yasha Nydoorin, Laura Bailey as Jester Lavorre, Liam O’Brien as Caleb Widogast, Marisha Ray as Beauregard “Beau” Lionett, Taliesin Jaffe as Mollymauk “Molly” Tealeaf, Matthew Mercer as Essek Thelyss, Mark Strong as Trent Ikithon, Lucy Liu as Empress Leylas Kryn, and Ming-Na Wen as Dairon.
Tasha Huo is the showrunner and an executive producer for The Mighty Nein, and she’s written several episodes. Before this, she worked on projects like Netflix’s The Witcher: Blood Origin, the animated series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, and the movie Red Sonja. She’s also writing the script for the new live-action Naruto movie.
The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 debuts on Prime Video on June 3.
