Streaming services are all evolving, adjusting their prices and subscription options. Now, after more than ten years, one platform is also making changes that could directly challenge Netflix and its user-friendly approach.
The streaming service recently launched a redesigned home screen. While the previous system functioned well, the new version is more user-friendly, addressing subscriber feedback. It offers improved suggestions for what to watch, a feature that helped Netflix become a leader in the streaming world.
What’s New With Roku
Roku launched a major update on May 27th: a redesigned home screen. The company says the new screen is simpler and more tailored to each user, developed based on how people actually use Roku.
The updated home screen now features a “Top Picks” section right at the top, offering recommendations tailored to your past activity and preferences.
Top Picks offers personalized recommendations based on what you like, alongside currently popular content on Roku and the biggest entertainment highlights right now. Roku emphasizes that everyone’s experience is unique – the content you see is tailored to your individual interests.
We’ve added a new ‘For You’ section that uses your interests to suggest fresh, personalized videos, making it easier to find something to watch without endless scrolling.
Now you can quickly access the apps you use most! This feature puts your favorites front and center, learning your habits with the help of AI. It automatically adapts to your routines, frequently watched content, and the apps you use, so you don’t have to manually organize anything – getting to what you love is now simpler than ever.
Users can easily customize the experience by adding or removing apps they don’t want. Other apps will still be available, but won’t be prominently displayed unless used frequently.
Roku has been updated with several new features. These include ‘Destinations,’ which are curated collections of content based on genre and mood. You’ll also find quicker access to frequently used features like saving lists, continuing to watch, and setting the sleep timer, thanks to improved shortcuts and search. Plus, there’s a new Roku City tile that lets you explore an interactive version of the classic screensaver, and ‘Daily Scoop’ provides real-time updates on trending shows and pop culture.
Anthony Wood, the CEO and founder of Roku, explained that when redesigning the Home Screen, they prioritized user feedback. They spoke with viewers, conducted thorough testing, and refined the design based on both user input and data analysis to create a truly improved experience.
We’ve redesigned the main screen to make finding entertainment easier than ever, while still keeping the simple Roku experience you love. Over 100 million homes will immediately notice the improvement when they turn on their TVs, and it creates a better opportunity for our streaming partners too.
Roku Is Now Becoming Easier Than Netflix
While many streaming services are competing for viewers, Netflix remains the clear leader. Its combination of original series, popular licensed shows, and a user-friendly app keeps it as the top choice for a lot of people, even those who subscribe to multiple streaming platforms.
Netflix’s latest update could change what makes it stand out from other streaming services. Currently, Netflix excels at showing users a personalized and constantly updated selection of content through its user-friendly interface, with features like autoplay and automatically generated rows. However, this update allows Roku to become the main hub for discovering content, not just for Netflix, but for all streaming platforms.
This change will significantly affect all streaming services. While what people watch is always important, the new Quick Access button now highlights top apps and influences viewing choices even before users open Netflix, Prime Video, or Disney+.
