Idris Elba says he was ‘never in the race’ to be the next James Bond

Idris Elba has stated he wasn’t actually competing for the role of the next James Bond. Although he’s been frequently mentioned as a possible replacement for Daniel Craig, the actor clarifies he wasn’t seriously considered.

Despite speculation, he’s made it clear he won’t be the next James Bond, and confirms he was never seriously considered for the role.

He told People magazine he wasn’t worried about being replaced. “They’re clearly looking for a younger face,” he said, adding that he wished the new cast all the best and was excited to see what they do. He thinks it’s going to be great.

“I’m honestly not in the race ever. I wasn’t in the race in the first place.”

Elba once shared that he was discouraged by the racist response he received when he was first considered for the role.

People who disagreed with the idea turned things negative and unpleasant by focusing on race. It devolved into pointless arguments, and I ended up taking the worst of it.

The upcoming James Bond film will be directed by Denis Villeneuve, known for Dune, and written by Steven Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders. This follows Amazon MGM gaining control of the Bond franchise’s creative direction last year.

So, everyone’s talking about who’s going to be the next James Bond, and two names keep popping up: Callum Turner and Jacob Elordi. I’ve even seen that Rosamund Pike – a former Bond girl herself – is really backing Elordi! She told GQ he’s a fantastic actor and, honestly, looks the part. She was like, “Why not him?” It’s getting me even more hyped to see who they pick!

The podcast The Rest in Entertainment reported that Jacob Elordi is now a leading contender, with journalist Marina Hyde stating she’s heard from multiple sources that he’s “moved into pole position.”
