Following a controversial Netflix special that sparked arguments between comedians and upset viewers due to a joke about George Floyd, Kevin Hart maintains that anything goes when it comes to comedy – just like in love and war.
Kevin Hart recently discussed the backlash from his Netflix special, “Roast of Kevin Hart,” on “The Breakfast Club.” The special contained jokes that many viewers found offensive. This incident is similar to a situation involving comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, who also faced criticism for controversial material – in his case, jokes made at a 2024 rally for Donald Trump. Hinchcliffe hosts the popular podcast “Kill Tony,” known for its edgy and often politically incorrect humor.
He playfully told Kevin Hart that the Black community was incredibly proud of him. He then added a poignant joke, saying that George Floyd would be smiling so widely from above, it would feel like he couldn’t breathe.
In 2020, George Floyd was killed by police officer Derek Chauvin, who knelt on his neck for over nine minutes. Floyd repeatedly said, “I can’t breathe,” more than 20 times before he died. This tragic event led to widespread protests around the world, marking the largest civil rights movement since the 1960s. Hart attended Floyd’s memorial service and a private funeral in Minneapolis.
Kevin Hart explained that while the joke about George Floyd wasn’t appropriate, he understood why it was included in the roast, given the audience and the nature of the event. He acknowledged that racial humor is often part of that type of performance.
Entertainment & Arts
The Netflix is a Joke Festival filled Los Angeles with a week of non-stop comedy, featuring stand-up routines, podcasts, variety shows, and music from major stars like Jerry Seinfeld, Dave Chappelle, and Wanda Sykes.
Hart explained that this comedic style isn’t original, and thought Tony Hinchcliffe delivered one of the best performances of the night.
“Would I tell those jokes? No, but do I get why they’re being told? Yes,” Hart said.
I recently spoke with Terrence Floyd, George Floyd’s brother, after the Comedy Central roast. He told me he was really hoping Kevin Hart would intervene when another comedian, Jimmy Hinchcliffe, started crossing the line. Terrence felt Hart, as the host, had a responsibility to reel Hinchcliffe in.
During the podcast, Hart explained he wasn’t expecting to physically remove anyone. He said, “I was hired to host a successful roast, and that’s what I delivered.”
The recent Netflix roast has sparked a lot of discussion, and the comedians involved have been subtly criticizing each other lately. Chelsea Handler was particularly outspoken, sharing her opinions on both Jeff Ross and Shane Gillis, who also performed. She revealed that former partners of these comedians contacted her privately to confirm what she already suspected about their behavior.
Hollywood Inc.
Netflix is expanding into daily live streaming. Beginning June 1st, they will launch their first daily show, featuring iHeartRadio’s “The Breakfast Club.”
She stated on Deon Cole’s podcast, “Funny Knowing You,” that she believes certain people are racist, prejudiced, and sexist, and that they act as if nothing can harm them.
Handler claimed a joke Gillis made about harming Hart was incredibly offensive, even comparing it to rape. Gillis countered by saying Handler was using the situation to gain attention.
During Monday’s “Kill Tony” podcast, Hinchcliffe reacted to comments made by Handler by using a vulgar term to describe her.
