Jason Derulo has announced he’s moving away from his energetic, outgoing image and is planning a new direction for his career.
The 36-year-old American singer is reinventing herself, moving away from the image fans are familiar with.
Jason announced that his Saturday London concert, part of The Last Dance Tour, will be his final performance. He described it as a farewell to the persona fans have come to know.
This is both a way to honor what’s been and a glimpse of what’s next. It’s like saying goodbye to one chapter of my life and hello to a brand new one.
Honestly, listening to him talk to The Sun really resonated with me. He explained that he’s changed so much as a person over the last decade, and his music is naturally evolving right along with him. It’s not just about new sounds, though – he genuinely feels like he needs to explore completely different creative paths, and I totally get that. It’s exciting to see an artist embrace change like this.
Jason recently revealed that breaking his neck in 2013 was a deeply difficult period in his life, explaining how the injury led him to cancel his tour.
The singer shared that he fractured a vertebra in his spine while practicing a dance routine for his Future History World Tour. He fell and landed on his head during rehearsals.
I was really worried when I heard Jason talking to Jamie Laing on the podcast. He explained that his fall actually caused a ‘hangman’s break,’ which is a seriously severe type of fracture – the same one you’d get from a hanging. It was so bad, he had to completely step away for seven months to recover, and honestly, I was just relieved he was able to come back at all.
Jason shared with Jamie that the most difficult period of his life was undoubtedly when he broke his neck.
He continued, explaining that he was practicing back tucks to build up his stamina for the upcoming tour.
We were performing a series of consecutive shows, pausing occasionally for breaks. After about twenty shows in a row, I slipped and fell while performing.
Okay, so, like, the biggest rule is you never give up, right? Even if you mess up, you just keep going. But I totally messed up. I fell, and I landed right on my head – I actually heard something crack! I instantly thought, ‘Oh no, this is bad!’ It was terrifying, honestly.
A wave of intense heat suddenly hit my neck, and honestly, my first thought was, ‘Oh no, is this it?’ It was a terrifying moment, and I instantly wondered if my life was over.
Jason, then 24 years old, shared that his mother used to drive him to rehearsals and wait in the car. But on one occasion, she actually drove him to the hospital instead.
He remembered being in terrible pain while his mother drove him to the hospital, but he didn’t want her to realize just how much he was suffering.
Riding in the passenger seat was awful – every little bump felt huge! I’ve honestly never experienced such a bumpy ride.
He continued, explaining that when they arrived at the hospital, they got X-rays done overnight. The doctor then told him he had a fracture known as a ‘hangman’s break’.
This injury is similar to the one sustained in a hanging, and it could have been much more serious. It will likely keep you sidelined for seven months, effectively ending your tour.
Jason shared that his recovery was difficult, and he worried about taking several months off work because he was just starting his career.
The singer explained that he had to cancel his entire tour and felt lost about what to do with his time afterward.
Honestly, I was completely unsure about my future. Taking a significant amount of time off felt really daunting, and I questioned if it was even feasible for me at that point.
This was fairly early on in my career, right after my second album came out. That album had two singles, ‘Don’t Want To Go Home’ and ‘It Girl,’ that did reasonably well, but they weren’t massive hits.
He explained he was unsure about his future and wondered if he’d reached his peak. During the following seven months, he established a daily routine to help maintain a positive outlook and avoid feeling discouraged.
I used to start my day by walking on the treadmill for 40 minutes before heading home.
I’d come home and spend nine to twelve hours straight in the studio. Then I’d eat, go to bed, and repeat the same process every day.
