How Big Mouth Creator’s New Netflix Show Mating Season Compares To His Previous Animated Hit

Mating Season is turning up the heat.

Nick Kroll is the creative force behind several incredibly funny adult animated shows that honestly depict the messy and emotional experience of growing up. His Netflix hit, Big Mouth, is a musical comedy inspired by Kroll and Andrew Goldberg’s own teenage years in New York City, and has become popular worldwide. Kroll himself provides the voice for over 70 characters, alongside a fantastic cast including John Mulaney, Jordan Peele, and Maya Rudolph.

The animated series Big Mouth has expanded with spinoffs like Human Resources and Mating Season. Mating Season recently launched on Netflix, and in a conversation with Ash Crossan from ScreenRant, Nick Kroll talked about how the new show compares to Big Mouth and how it aims to strike a balance between comedy and heartfelt moments – something Big Mouth is known for doing well.

I really enjoyed Big Mouth – it was funny, outrageous, and often surprisingly emotional. With this show, how do you manage to combine those over-the-top, silly moments with genuine, relatable human experiences?

With shows like Big Mouth, my aim is to create humor that’s both outrageous and deeply relatable, and to explore genuine emotions. We’ve found that the strongest episodes – in Big Mouth and now with Mating Season – are the ones where the emotional core is strong, because that allows for even bigger and funnier jokes, and vice versa. When both the humor and the emotional truth are working well, that’s when it really hits.

Norm Macdonald and Andrew Santino’s new comedy series, Mating Season, playfully explores the raw, instinctive side of finding love. The show stars Nick Kroll, along with Zach Woods, June Diane Raphael, and Sabrina Jalees. Early reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are positive, giving it a 67% rating based on 9 reviews, with critics praising its ability to be both funny and surprisingly smart.

Big Mouth is a popular, often edgy, animated comedy that helped pave the way for adult animation on Netflix. After eight seasons, the show concluded in 2025. It was a consistent hit on Netflix, frequently topping the streaming charts, and earned three Emmy nominations.

Even though the show received overwhelmingly positive reviews – a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – the creators felt it had run its course after a successful run of over 70 episodes as one of Netflix’s longest original scripted series. It’s currently unknown if there will be any future seasons.

Mating Season is now available to stream on Netflix.
