A new sci-fi series on Netflix, created by the team behind Stranger Things, has quickly become the most popular show in the UK. Called The Boroughs, it stars Alfred Molina and Geena Davis as residents of a seemingly perfect retirement community located in the desert. The show mixes science fiction with emotional storytelling as it explores the secrets hidden within this town.
I’m totally hooked on The Boroughs! It just came out on Netflix on May 21st and it’s already the number one show in the UK – can you believe it? It’s also topping the charts in the US! The story starts with this really shocking murder – an older man is killed by something… not of this world, and it immediately grabs your attention. It’s created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, and it’s a wild ride so far.
Sam Cooper (Molina), recently widowed and still mourning his wife Lilly (played by Jane Kaczmarek of Malcolm in the Middle), moves into a house with a troubled past. He’s a bit of a loner, but the quirky, close-knit neighbors quickly welcome him. Their peaceful community is disrupted when a second unexpected death occurs, leaving them all to grapple with a strange mystery.

The film also features performances by Alfre Woodward, Denis O’Hare, Clarke Peters, and Bill Pullman. Jena Malone plays Sam’s daughter, Claire.
This series is the newest project resulting from the partnership between the Duffer Brothers’ production company, Upside Down Pictures, and Netflix. It follows the earlier release of the horror series Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen and the animated Stranger Things spin-off, Tales From ’85.

The series has received overwhelmingly positive reviews, earning a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a 95% approval score based on 43 reviews. Critics have called it a unique and exciting show, with one review from The Times of India describing it as “a thrilling show that tries to do something different.”

According to But Why Tho?, The Boroughs is a standout Netflix series this year, thanks to its clever plot twists, well-developed characters, and consistently strong performances from the entire cast.
